Task Introduction
In this assessment task you will write a1600-wordwritten report that provides the background
information and a context for how the ethnic (sub)group of yourcase studyhas influenced cuisine in
Australia. This is an INDIVIDUAL task further exploring your case study that you worked on for assessment
task 2.
Task Description
In your written report you should describe the following:
§The geographical location(s) or country where your case study originates from (Vietnam, Iraq, India,
Australia, Sub-Saharan Africa-Dinka people group)
§Historical influences on current food practices within that country
§Current day culinary practices including:
oStaple as well supplementary foods;
oOther common additions to foods including condiments e.g. herbs and spices;
oKey food preparation and cooking methods;
oRegional variations;
oInfluence of religion / beliefs;
oCelebratory meals and special occasions involving food;
oSimilarities with other cuisines;
oUnusual aspect of culinary culture.
§Main agricultural, farming and/or fishing outputs and exports/imports (where relevant).
§Apparent consumption of key commodities and comparison to Australian data or for ATSI changes in
apparent consumption over time (Food & Agriculture Organisation data).
§Brief details of migration pattern (when, why, in what numbers did migration occur) to Australia (not
applicable for ATSI) and exploration of sources of exposure to the country’s food culture e.g. travel
and travel writing, other media etc. (How are we exposed the food culture?)
§Presence/influence of food culture/cuisine within broader Australian food and culinary world using
specific examples to illustrate. (Provide specific examples of presence and/or integration of food
culture in Australia).
