The writing process has been building toward this step. In Week 3, you began researching and comparing and contrasting some of that research. This week, you will work on composing the first draft of your introduction and asserting an arguable thesis statement in Week 4 Discussion. In the Week 4 Project, you will compose the first paragraphs of your body section, where you will introduce two argumentative claims and provide supporting evidence for each claim. As always, if you need additional guidance through this week’s assignments, please reach out to your instructor for help.In drafting the introduction, think of an engaging way to open the essay. How will you interest the reader in your topic? Will you begin with a focusing question or a brief scene to grab the reader’s attention? After your opening, you will introduce the topic and give background information, working your way down to the thesis statement, which is your position on the problem and the main point of your essay. With all of the violence that is happening in West Palm Beach, Florida, especially with losing a dear friend of mine. I think its important to understand how much guns take a toll on our communities. Writing about my friend Crystal dying from gun violence made me realize there is so much more going on in this world and it made me change my topic a bit. My son’s dad committed suicide October 12th, 2017. These tragedies aren’t happening because of how easy it is so obtain a weapon. It starts within a persons mind. Mental Illness isn’t taken serious and it needs to be. There is no quick fix for this but everybody can make a difference. If people educated themselves about mental illness and realize most of these people suffer from diseases and aren’t really violent or trying to harm people or themselves, thats a step right there. People who suffer from mental illness didn’t choose to be. Depression, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, dementia and eating disorders are some major mental illnesses but just a few that people like my sons dad Reuben dealt with and even myself. The way different situations are treated is one step to understanding how to deal with someone with mental illness. If we educate ourselves we as people are more equipped to handle these situations. The people around Reuben up until his death knew he was suicidal, knew he was using drugs and knew he was battling mental illnesses such as bi polar, anxiety and depression. These people failed to educate themselves and truthfully failed to help him. If you know someone is suicidal and has mental illnesses and fears law enforcement, you don’t call the police because he has a gun. I feel as if he felt cornered to his death. There is a way to talk to people. Law enforcement are trained to handle different situations but I definitely believe they could learn a thing or two on how to deal with people with mental illness. This isn’t a gun or weapon problem. We have a mental health problem in our world. We need to be educated, we need more programs, we need to ACCEPT that people have mental issues and WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND IT AND THAT MENTAL HEALTH IS REAL. In some of these cultures they don’t believe in mental illness and medicating their people. I do believe that you shouldn’t go fixing something that isn’t broken, but in this case we should. People who suffer, don’t rationalize situations the same. There is no known cause of mental illness, but it is a combination of environmental, psychological and biological factors.
