Visit the World Justice Project website and click on the What is the Rule of Law? tab located at the top, left side of the homepage. Read through the organization’s explanation of their WJP Rule of Law Index. Note that one of the factors is Criminal Justice. Click on the Criminal Justice link to read the sub-factors.
Now that you understand how the World Justice Project compiles data, and for what purpose, click theExplore our Index Data link on the right of the screen, which will take you to a map of the globe. Click View Tour in the top left corner to learn how to navigate the data (Please note this map does not work in Internet Explorer. Use a different browser such as, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari). Use the Rule of Law Index™ 2015to complete the following questions. Note: Remember that the Index measures how ordinary people perceive their own experiences in 102 countries around the world.
- Each country analyzed by WJP is indicated by a shade of purple. The key is located at the bottom of the screen. Select one country that falls into the lowest score range (.20-.40) and one country that falls into the middle score range (.41-.60.). The United States will be your example for the top third of the range.
- What countries did you select for the bottom and middle ranges?
- What are their populations, capitals, and current leaders? Summarize in one paragraph a notable current event that you believe has some bearing on the data collected by WJP.
- Please notice that most countries are grouped together according to score. For example, all of Western Europe is scored in the top third, while almost all of Asia is scored in the middle third. Propose an explanation for this geographic similarity. Why do you think that countries that share geographic boundaries also seem to share similarities in the data collected by WJP?
- For each of the two countries you’ve selected, do the following: click on the country, then over on the right, click on theView Full Profile tab. Examine the data and look for particularly high or low numbers. Which outliers do you see? Given what you know about the country you’ve selected, why do you think those numbers are particularly high or low?
- Examine the full data for the United States. Under theCriminal Justicesection, look at the categories titled,No discriminationandEffectiveInvestigations.
- Note that the U.S. falls well below the reported scores for the EU/EFTA/North America in theNo discriminationcategory. Explain. Why do you think that Americans are reporting to the WJP that they believe discrimination occurs at high rates in the U.S.?
