Essay, Nursing: why is the black race overrepresented in mental healthy and in prison compared to white race in uk population Sample Answer Introduction In United Kingdom, 10% of all prisoners are black, 4% come from the Asian community while 31% accounts for the black Britons (Jones, Brookes and Shuker 2013, Pg. 144-158). The black in United Kingdom represents 2% of the population. Black prisoners account for the highest number of the minority group representing 54% of total minority group in prison. Between the year 1999 and 2002 the population of black people in prison in UK increased by 51% compared to 12% increase of the aggregate prisoners growth (Prins et. el 2013, Pg. 635-645). The figures indicate that black people in prison are seven times more per population. The over representation of the black people in the United Kingdom’s prison can be attributed to many factors as revealed in the ensuing segment. Discussion Discriminative bureaucracies in the British custodial system can be highly linked with overrepresentation of the black people in prison and mental health facilities. There is high discrimination of black people by the criminal justice agencies (Saltus et el 2013, Pg. 165-176). On the other hand, the department in charge of health uses coercive methods of treating black people who have mental problems. The organization procedures in the department of health facilities takes precedence over the need of the black mental health patients. The discriminative way of handling black people, when they come to the criminal justice settings, results into many black people in prison, having mental problems. Statistics indicates that black people have a 40% more chances of been referred to the mental health services, when they are in the criminal justice system (Anderson 2013, Pg. 265). Psychological makeup of black people in UK and the conditions that they are subjected to, makes them result into criminal activities. Black people have the highest rate of poverty in the United Kingdom. Hard economic times coupled with unfavourable treatment, affects their behaviour and mental stability.
