30 Jun Bacterial Pathogens
Question Description
When you are ready, respond to the topic below.
Please review the Discussion Board grading rubric in the course Syllabus. Discussion responses should be on topic, original, and contribute to the quality of the Discussion by making frequent informed references to lesson materials and Seminars. Initial Discussion responses should be around 100 words. Responses to your classmates or instructor should be around 50 words.
There is one topic to respond to this week. Respond to the topic and provide two or more responses to classmates that are thoughtful and advance the Discussion.
(You can access this Discussion by clicking Discussion under Unit 6).
Bacterial Pathogens
Choose any one of the bacterial pathogens and discuss its appearance, staining reaction, culture characteristics, disease caused and mechanism of disease.
When responding to your classmates be sure to note similarities and differences between the bacterial pathogens both of you chose. How do these influence virulence?
DISCUSSION POST #1
“Of all the food borne intoxication in humans, none is more dangerous than botulism” (Pommerville, J.C. 2014, P. 359). Botulism is a food borne bacteria that causes a dead illness caused by, “Clostridium botulinum, a spore-forming, obligately anaerobic, gram-positive bacillus” (Pommerville, J.C. 2014, P. 359). The endo toxin is a, ” neurotoxins so powerful that it is thought to be the deadliest substance known to science”. (Pommerville, J.C. 2014, P. 359). There are different variations of the toxin, but type is the most often seen in food borne illness. Some of the effects of the neurotoxin are, “neurological manifestations, including blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and chewing, and labored breathing”(Pommerville, J.C. 2014, P. 359). These are the result of the neurotoxin on the bodies nervous system. The toxin itself stops the bodies release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Without acetylcholine the body no longer has control over it muscles and results in the body not being able to control the muscles needed for the body to breath, which is known as respiratory paralysis. After a day or two like this you die, and I would imagine a painful death. The only cure for botulinum is antitoxins, but the type of toxin must be known for the treatment to be effective and can take up to a year. It is often found in air tight food cans and cases are low in the united states. One thing to note is even know it is one of the deadliest toxins we use it in Botox for wrinkled skin.

DISCUSSION POST #2
Hello everyone,
The pathogen I decided to discuss is Cholera. Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by consuming contaminated food or water with the Vibrio cholera bacterium. Cholera impacts three to five million people every year, with over 100,000 deaths globally (CDC, 2016). Thankfully most people who become infected do survive and are treated with rehydrating treatments. For severe cases, oral rehydration may be required through intravenous therapy using electrolytes and a glucose solution.
Cholera cells appear as slim, short, curved rods with flagellum for motility (Pommerville, 2014). They are also aerobic, gram-negative, non-spore forming.
This disease functions by entering the system through contaminated food or water and affects the intestinal tract. This pathogen can be vulnerable to acids in the stomach; however, if enough are ingested they will survive and take over the small intestine. At this point the cells will move through the intestinal epithelium and secrete an enterotoxin, called cholera toxin, which causes an individual to loose bodily fluids and electrolytes (Pommerville, 2014). As the patient cannot hold down any liquids, the body starts to shut down and, if left untreated, the brain goes in to shock and coma, eventually death can occur within 24 hours of symptoms.
As Cholera is a gram-negative bacterium, it will not be able to hold its color in the gram staining technique and will not hold the crystal violet color. Cholera will stain red because of its thinner peptidoglycan wall (Bruckner, 2016). Cholera’s cultural characteristics are predominantly aerobic and they grow best at a pH of 8.6 and at a temperature of 37’C, and they grow really well on an ordinary alkaline media (Sangwan, n.d.). When put in an alkaline nutrient agar, the colonies of cholera cells become moist, translucent and appear as round disks with a tint of bluish color under a microscope (Sangwan, n.d.). They also may have a distinctive odor. When the cells are in a blood agar there is a green area around the colonies and will eventually become clear due to hemodigestion, which is the killing of blood cells by a pathogen.
