Lesson 10 Objectives: (These are specific objectives that must be met, as outlined in the online lesson.
Please focus on these, rather than purely on the chapter material because the exams are based off of
these. In other words, the exam questions will test whether you meet and understand these particular
points. Therefore I cannot stress enough how important they are to your success in the class.)

5. Provide direct and indirect evidence for the theory of evolution (e.g., the fossil record, biogeography,
comparative anatomy, comparative embryology, and molecular biology).
6. Explain the significance in studying homologous and vestigial structures.
7. Distinguish between the following concepts: genetic drift versus gene flow; the founder effect versus
bottleneck effect; directional, disruptive and stabilizing selection; and sexual versus natural selection.
8. Analyze both the historical and current debate over the theory of evolution.
9. Compare early methods of biological classification to modern classification techniques.
Teaching Element
This teaching element is somewhat different from those written for the past lessons.
It is well known that Charles Darwin visited an archipelago of islands 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. He left England aboard the
H.M.S. Beagle in 1831 for a 5 year journey. He first landed on San Cristobal Island. The famous book the Origin of Species was
published in 1876.
The animals found on the Galapagos Islands, visited by Charles Darwin are not found anywhere else in the world. The government of
Ecuador has done a great job to preserve the islands and to prevent removal of any animals. Therefore you will see very few of these animals
in zoos throughout the world. These animals roam free, and visitors are have the privilege to walk among them. They have no fear of
humans, and there are very few predators consequently they live a very stress free life. A rule of islands is that you must never approach or
try to pet these animals. If they are in your path you must stop and wait for them to pass or walk around them. Visits to the islands require
1 certified guide for every 16 visitors.
In this teaching element I want to show you some photos that I took while retracing the footsteps of Charles Darwin on these islands. I
will provide captions where possible.

The Flightless Cormorant (see below) This bird is also featured in a segment of the movie Master and
Commander which has several scenes that fictionalize Darwin’s visit to the islands.

Richard Dawkins’ video titled The Genius Of Charles Darwin Part 1 Life, Darwin & Everything is worth watching. Do not be
offended by Dawkin’s proclamation at the beginning that he does not believe in Gd.

Announcements: Regarding Online Exams
The second exam will cover lessons 7 through 12 Period 6b
They may only be opened 1 time; do not click on the link for the exam until you are ready to
complete it or you will lose your attempt and receive no credit for the exam.
The exams are the most important events of the course. As stated in the syllabus, students
must earn at least a 60% average on the exams in order to receive a passing grade in the
class (irrespective of the overall class average). For example, if a student earns a 50% on the
first exam, a 70% on the second exam, and a 54% on the third exam, a combined average of 58%
would be earned and therefore the student would not pass the class.
If the exams are not taken on time, there will be a 10% penalty deducted from the final score
if taken up to four days late – and no credit thereafter.
Each exam is timed and password protected. The password will be provided to you by your
instructor prior to the exam. The exam consists of 100 questions and is broken into two sections;
each containing 50 questions. You will have 40 minutes to complete each part (40 minutes for part
1 and 40 minutes for part 2). There is a timer in the upper right hand corner of the exam to help you
keep track of your progress.
Please make sure you have answered all questions in Part 1 prior to clicking on the submit button.
Once a part has been submitted, you will not be able to return to that section. Immediately following
submission of Part 1, return to the lesson for the link to access Part 2 of the exam.
BOTH parts of the online exam MUST be completed in one sitting. For example, students are
not permitted to complete Part 1 of Exam 1 on Monday, and then return to the assessment and
complete Part 2 of Exam 1 on Friday.
Any student found completing the online exams in multiple sittings without department approval, will
lose credit.
In Period 6a you will be doing Lab 9 Classification.
1.There are no lab materials needed for lab nine.
2. You might want to do a web search and take a look at examples of dichotomous classification keys. It may help you to work
through the lab and understand the keys you will be working with.
3. I suggest you read through the lab questions before you read through the lab. In this way you can have some idea of what to
look for that might provide an answer to a particular question.

Notebook:
Keep a course notebook where you can keep your notes over what you learn in the online lessons and as
you read the textbook. It will be easier to study if you have everything in one place.
Draw Diagrams:
As you read the book and take notes, you might find it helpful to draw the diagrams that are included in
what you are learning. Sometimes you might want to copy the diagrams from the book (like perhaps when
you are learning about the Krebs cycle) or other times you might want to create your own diagrams based
on what you are reading. This can help give a visual representation of how the concepts are related or
connected to one another.
Textbook:
In the textbook, there are review questions at the end of each chapter. Make sure that you can answer all
of the questions after you read each chapter. If not, go back and review where necessary.
Create a Weekly Schedule for Yourself:
Please remember that in order to be successful in this course you should be spending at least 12-15 hours
each week studying biology. Some students find it helpful to create a schedule each week to help plan
their time and organize their studies. I would recommend looking at everything that you do each week and
then creating a daily schedule to help you stay on task.
