Question
Think of your hypothesis as an IF/THEN statement. The “if” portion tells you what the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE is. This is the item that you change in order to see what happens to the dependent variable. The “then” part of the statement refers to the DEPENDENT VARIABLE. Any change that you see and record in the dependent variable DEPENDS on what you do to the independent variable in the experiment.
For example: I want to see what happens to test grades if I eat cookies for breakfast.
Hypothesis: IF I eat cookies for breakfast, THEN my test grades will improve.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (the factor that “I” the researcher change) is COOKIES FOR BREAKFAST.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE (what changes depending on whether or not I eat cookies for breakfast) are my test grades.
1. Using an IF/THEN statement, write the hypothesis of Exercise 2 (the effect of temperature on enzyme activity) of this week’s lab.
2. Identify the independent variable and the dependent variable.
3. If you wanted to see the effect of some other factor on the dependent variable, for example, substrate concentration, what would your new hypothesis, independent, and dependent variables be?
4. How might you set up an experiment to test this hypothesis? Consider what factors you, the researcher would change (the independent variable), what changes you would be looking for/recording for your results, how you would know the change you observed in the dependent variable was due to your experiment (what is the control that you will compare your results with), and what factors could influence and alter the outcome and so must be held equal among all experimental and control groups (the controlled variables.)
