BIOLOGY 434-Introduction to Molecular BiologyProfessor: Dr. VegaSpring 2020Tentative Lecture SyllabusClass meets TR 11:30-12:45 PM in SH 102Course Description: The goal of this course is to provide you with informationregarding the basic mechanisms (replication, transcription and translation) of molecularbiology as well as the experimental evidence supporting these models. At the end ofthe semester, it is expected that you will be able to clearly describe how these processesoccur, understand which molecular experiments would be applied for a particularquestion and summarize recently published papers with respect to the overall questionbeing asked, the experimental results and scientific conclusions that can be drawn fromthe paper.Text- Required: Craig, et al. Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function(second edition). Additional journal articles will be assigned as appropriate.Course Requirements: Microbiology (Biol 350), Genetics (Biol 380) and Biochemistry I(Chem 370) are all required for this course. If you have not had these requirements youshould talk to me immediately.Course grading: Final grades will be based on lecture exams and variousquizzes/assignments.Exams (75% of final grade): There will be three lecture exams. Each exam will coverapproximately 1/3 of the material and will be derived mostly from lecture material.However, a portion of the exam may come from the book. The last exam will be givenduring the final exam period (Tuesday May 5th, 11:30AM-12:45PM) but will only coverthe last 1/3 of the material. Exams will be made up of short answer and essayquestions.Re-grades: Exams will be re-graded upon request. However, exams must be submittedwith a written description of the problem within one week of the day I return theexams. Please note that I reserve the right to re-check the entire exam.Make-up exams: Make-up exams will NOT be given (except in circumstances ofserious illness accompanied by a physician’s note and a call before the exam).Research Paper Summary (15% of final grade): For this assignment, each person willchoose one primary research article written within the last year. The article shouldcover some aspect of molecular biology and must be approved by me. Each studentwill be asked to write a summary of the paper including: What question was beingasked, what experimental results were obtained and do the author’s conclusions agreewith the experimental results. The written summary should be six double spacedpages. This paper will be graded, returned, and can be re-written towards the end ofthe semester. The paper being summarized must be included with the summary. If afinal draft is submitted, the first draft must be included with the final draft of yourpaper along with research paper being discussed.Quizzes/Assignments (10% of final grade): There will be 4 quizzes and otherassignments during the semester. One of the quizzes will be given in class but the restwill be given through Canvas. Please note that there will be no makeup quizzes sofailure to submit a quiz assignment on time will result in 0 points for the quiz. If youhave any issues accessing Canvas in general, please let me know at least one classbefore the first quiz. With respect to the assignment, there will be short summaries ofresearch articles (separate from the larger paper assignment).Cheating: Cheating is taken very seriously and evidence of cheating may lead to a zerofor the assignment, an F for the course or expulsion from the university, depending onthe severity.Plagiarism: Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated in this class. No credit will begiven for plagiarized work and students caught plagiarizing may receive an F for thecourse and may be referred to academic affairs. For this course, plagiarism means usingthe words of another individual in your paper.
