11 Jun Biology BSC1005 – The predator will have a mouth
Question
General Biology BSC1005L Evolution Name: ________________ Activity: Microevolution
Procedure
We will assume that our bean population is prey and that you are the predator. The following
rules will apply to the predator.
1. The predator will have a mouth, one plastic drinking cup, in which to hold their prey.
2. The student should count out 25 dried beans of each of the four colors. The 100 total
beans should be placed in the bean container, thoroughly mixed, and evenly distributed over the
habitat.
3. The predators may start capturing prey once the lights have been turned off. The following
rules must be observed:
a. The Predator should sit or kneel at the edge of the habitat.
b. The Predator may only use their hand to pick up prey and only pick up one bean at a
time.
c. The Predator will capture 25 preys as fast as possible without regard to color.
d. The Predator may not use their mouth (plastic cup) to capture prey, and their mouth
must be held in the other hand while capturing prey (i.e., they may not set their mouth
on the floor or rug).
4. At the end of a single predation attempt, record the number of each type of bean captured
by the predator in the table provided.
5. To determine the prey population of beans for the second generation, count out one bean
for each survivor in the first generation (out of 25 spotted beans, if 10 were captured, there
would be 15 survivors. Therefore, count out 15 spotted beans to be added to the habitat). Place
all of the offspring beans in the bean container, mix thoroughly, and spread evenly over the
habitat.
6. Once the habitat is ready, the predator should capture 25 prey as fast as possible,
repeating the steps 2, 3, and 4 for the second generation. Fill in the data table for the second
generation.
7. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the third and fourth generations.

graph the number survived per generation. Each student’s result will be different and in
part depend on the background chosen for this experiment.
Discussion of Microevolution
1. In your experiment, which types of prey (beans) had the greatest number of survivors? 2. Which type of beans had the fewest number of survivors? 3. State a possible reason(s) for this difference: How do these results relate to the process of
natural selection? 3
