09 Jun Can you write a 1000 to 1200 character analysis or researched scene on hamlet?
For this essay, you will analyze a scene from the play we’ve been reading (Hamlet), or you will do a character study of one of the characters in the story.
For the scene study, you will be required to argue for what is happening in the scene and its significance to the rest of the play. For example, the gravedigger’s scene from the play Hamlet.
What role do the two gravediggers serve in the action of the play? What does their presence and interaction with Hamlet mean?
What about Hamlet’s speech in the graveyard? What are the implications of his words?
If you choose to analyze a character, tell me what the character’s motivations are. Is he/she justified in her actions? What his he/she driven by? Is it love or revenge? Is the character acting in his own best interest, or is he/she seeking the greater good? Is the character manipulated by others, or independent?
You will be required to consult at least 2 outside sources (from GALILEO) in addition to the textbook.
The paper should be from 1,000-1,200 words (4 to 6 pages) long and quote the outside sources.
You will need a Works Cited page as well.
See the attached file for an example of a scene analysis.
As before, apply these directions to your essay:
HOW TO WRITE ANY PAPER
Introduction:
First Sentence: Your first sentence should include the author of the text, the name of the text, and the publication date if possible.
Second and Third Sentence: The next two to three sentences should provide the historical and/or social context of the work. For instance, Hemingway wrote during the Modernist period, which occurred just after WWI and which expressed the Lost Generation’s disillusionment after the war, or Marx wrote during the Industrial Revolution, at the advent of Capitalism, and discusses the abuse of the Proletariat at the hands of the Bourgeoisie in The Communist Manifesto.
Fourth and Fifth: A quick summary of the passage or story. This summary should be no more than three sentences. Consider the following:
“In Hemingway’s ‘The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber’, a British couple goes on an African Safari led by tour guide Wilson. When Francis fails to shoot a lion, his cowardice results in his wife’s infidelity and ultimately, his own death”
“In ‘The Communist Manifesto,’ Marx establishes the principles of Communism and discusses the abuses by those in power that have led to a history of class struggle.”
Thesis: This is your claim about the text, either analytical or critical. (See following worksheet). A sample critical thesis (for a Critical Response) might read like the following:
“While Hemingway portrays his male characters fairly, his depiction of female characters like Margot is biased…”
“While Marx accurately represents the plight of the Proletariat under Capitalism, his prejudicial rhetoric slants his Manifesto and weakens his argument…”
You can agree/disagree with the text, but if you agree (your thesis argues for the text) your thesis must go beyond #metoo.
The Critical Response:
First and/or Second Paragraph: The first/second paragraph of your critical response will be an elaboration of your summary. The idea here is that the introduction contains a succinct, “who, what, when, where”, and the first paragraph goes into greater detail. In other words, while your introduction contains the bare minimum, that is, the scope of your paper (imagine drawing a chalk outline around the material you plan to discuss), your first paragraph covers the major ideas. Hint: read the topic sentences of each paragraph and consolidate them into a paragraph or two at most.
Second and/or Third Paragraph: After providing a summary, revisit your thesis and expound upon it here. In other words, apply your thesis to the text and show, via quotes and concrete examples, why your thesis is true. This section should be a full paragraph, not 1-2 sentences.
The Analytical Essay:
First Paragraph:
First Sentence: Your first sentence should be a topic sentence that makes a mini claim about the thesis.
Second and Third Sentence: These sentences should cite specific details from the text or quotes. General references via summary don’t suffice.
Third and Fourth Sentences: These sentences should analyze the quotes and references and discuss how they prove the topic sentences and thesis. Do not assume your reader will automatically understand the connection.
Fifth Sentence: This sentence should provide a transition to the next paragraph. Repeating words in the next (topic sentence) is a great way to transition.
Second Paragraph:
First Sentence: Your first sentence should be a topic sentence that makes a mini claim about the thesis.
Second and Third Sentence: These sentences should cite specific details from the text or quotes. General references via summary don’t suffice.
Third and Fourth Sentences: These sentences should analyze the quotes and references and discuss how they prove the topic sentences and thesis. Do not assume your reader will automatically understand the connection.
Fifth Sentence: This sentence should provide a transition to the next paragraph. Repeating words in the next (topic sentence) is a great way to transition.
Third, Fourth, etc Paragraph: Repeat the above.
Concluding Paragraph: This paragraph should summarize your previous points and wrap up the essay. DO NOT introduce new material in this paragraph.
