INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CURRENT EVENT PAPER
The following guidelines shall be followed for the required paper.
1. A current event topic shall be chosen for the paper. The current event has to
happen during the time the class is in session – sometime during this semester –
from August 31 forward. The topic chosen must be a topic that is covered in the
text and/or the class outline. The topic chosen may be taken from a variety of
mediums. For example:
a. If the topic is from a newspaper, a photocopy of the article shall be
attached to the paper. Insure that the date the article was written is
shown.
b. If it is a magazine article, a photocopy of the article shall be attached to
the paper. Insure that the date the article was written and the magazine
is shown
c. If it is an Internet article, a copy of the article shall be attached to the
paper – printed from the Internet. Insure that the date the article
appeared and the Internet site is listed.
d. If it is a television show – news, talk, or entertainment – list the show,
channel, date, and time aired on the reference page.
e. If it is a play, a photocopy of the program shall be attached to the paper.
Insure to list the play, theater, date, and time of the show on the reference
page.
f. If it is a movie, list the movie title, theater, date, and time of the show
(attach a ticket if possible) on the reference page.
g. If it is any other media, list the event, title of the session, date, and time of
the event on the reference page. (If the event has a ticket or information
pamphlet, attach it to the paper.)
2. In the main part of the paper, a three (3) part discussion shall be done.
1. Summarize the medium used.
2. How does the article compare or relate to the information in the text on
the same topic (the text being used as the “expert”).
3. Using the information in 1. and 2., express your views and opinions of the
information in the article and the text.
3. The paper shall have the following sections when turned into the instructor:
1. Title page – appropriate information required
-Title of the paper
-Student’s name
-Class designation
-May be imaginative if you like
2. The main part of the paper – shall be greater than 2 pages
-Introduction
-Body – as described in #2 above
-Conclusion/summary
3. Reference page – including your text, article, and other references used
A minimum of 2 references are required to be listed – the
textbook and the other references as noted above (your medium)
4. The required copies if necessary
5. The grading sheet shall be attached to the paper for grading (complete
the information at the beginning of the grading sheet). The grading sheet
is the last two pages of these guidelines. If this is missing the paper
will not be graded and/or assigned a grade
4. The paper shall be turned in stapled together. I do not require fancy covers as
they become very cumbersome when carrying around many papers. Do not wait
until the last minute to complete the paper; things happen – computer does not
work, cannot print it out on the school’s computer, your car broke down, the dog
ate your paper, it got wet and destroyed in the rain, etc. There will be no
excuses for not turning in your paper during the time allotted. The paper will not
be sent or accepted by a computer disk or by E-mail – programs may not be
compatible so that they may not be able to be read. THEY WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED PAST THE DEADLINE DATE FOR ANY REASON.
Grading of Papers
The papers shall be graded using the following criteria.
Spelling – 5 points – Being able to spell is being able to properly communicate with
other people in and out of your profession. It shows your professionalism and
knowledge.
0 misspelled – 5 points
1 – 6 misspelled – 4 points
7 – 15 misspelled – 3 points
16- 25 misspelled – 2 points
26 – 40 misspelled – 1 point
41 or more misspelled – 0 points
Grammar – 5 points – Again, using proper grammar when writing papers shows
professionalism and good communication.
0 grammatical errors – 5 points
1 – 6 grammatical errors – 4 points
7 – 15 grammatical errors – 3 points
16 – 25 grammatical errors – 2 points
26 – 40 grammatical errors – 1 point
41 or more grammatical errors – 0 points
Structure – 10 points – All papers have the following parts:
Introduction – 2 points – Introduces the topic of the paper
Body – 5 points – The discussion of the topic selected using the appropriate
references if needed or used
Proper paragraphing needs to be used
Summary/conclusion – 3 points – Summarizes the ideas presented in the
paper. This includes your views and opinions of the topic.
When writing the paper, do not title and/or separate the sections of the paper.
These sections should be clearly identified when the evaluator reads the paper.
Content – 10 points – This area will evaluate the ideas and points expressed in the
paper to meet the intent of the paper. This will be a subjective evaluation based on the
individual paper.
Logical Progression – 10 points – This area of the evaluation will take the ideas
presented and check to see how they were presented. In general, one idea should flow
into the next. At times, an idea may be introducing the next point in the paper. A logical
presentation is being reviewed in this area.
Format – 10 points – The papers shall be done in the following way:
Required length – 2 points
Title page – 2 points
Double spaced – 2 points
New Times Roman font – 2 points
Font size is 11 – 2 points
The paper margins shall be one (1) inch on a side.
The required length of the paper shall be greater than two (2) pages.
If any student is in need of help with the paper, he/she may go to the Writing Center
located in Building 5 in Room 155. Their extension is 1812.
I am not requiring a certain format for the paper – i.e. MLA or APA – as I am looking
more for the information in the paper and your views than I am writing in a certain style.
This does not excuse proper grammar or proper spelling.
