Research new service models such as Web hosting, storage area networks, application services provided by external sources, on-demand computing, utility computing, and grid computing. Also, research and learn how companies use incremental outsourcing as an entry method into the outsourcing arena. Based on the research and reading about incremental outsourcing, develop a four- to six-page Word document providing examples of the companies that have used the incremental outsourcing technique to minimize the risks associated with wholesale outsourcing.

In addition, complete the following activities:

• Collect information about your chosen company to determine if it has performed any type of outsourcing; used elements of on-demand computing, utility computing, or grid computing; and how successful the chosen strategy worked for the company. You should not only discuss successful projects but also those that were unsuccessful.
• Elaborate on how and why the techniques used by the company were successful or unsuccessful. If the company was unsuccessful, explain why you believe the projects failed and what could have been done to change failures to success. If the company was successful, explain why it succeeded, how IT leadership contributed to the success, and what technological elements helped the company succeed.

If the initial project failed, was the company able to recover from the failure and then succeed? How did the company succeed? What lessons were learned in either case?

Identify what framework the company established to manage the outsourced components. Did the company use SLA? What were some elements of the SLA? How did the company manage relationships with its outsourcing partners? Include any other interesting things you learned about minimizing risks through incremental outsourcing, on-demand computing, or grid computing. Speculate how outsourcing techniques might benefit the company if your chosen company has not used any of the outsourcing techniques. How would you ensure the success of any of the incremental outsourcing recommendations you make? Include your outsourcing recommendations and a narrative discussing what you have learned about managing relationships with service providers.
