Requirements

? Focused, strategically organized writing free of grammar/punctuation errors & tangled syntax
? MLA format, integrated sources, and Works Cited page free of all technical errors
Prompt
For Essay 3, you will develop, refine and research an exploratory question that stems from a personal experience, realization, or idea. Ideally this should be a

question that one can answer without relying on your opinion alone (like Essay #2 did). The question should also be susceptible to research: there is an answer on

which reasonable people might agree. You should approach this answer in one of two ways: either you dont currently know what that answer is, or if you have a hope or

an inkling for a certain answer, you havent yet looked into it fully. Youre open to discovering something, and youre open to discovering differing ideas and seeing

whats in them since youre exploring a question, not writing an argument. (Writing 122 covers the argument!) You are welcome to consider any arena for this question:

current events, family, love, hobbies, beliefs, science, art, media, etc.
Approach
Many students find that they want to use first person (I as long as its capitalized) and compose the essay as an I-Search: your exploration of a question that

engages you. Your reader wants to hear your voice and to understand your developing ideas. This is important your developing ideas. Your reader doesnt want to hear

solely what you already know and what you want to “preach” or convince your readers of. The essay can certainly grow out of your experiences and opinions, but it must

move beyond them. Thats where your research comes in and also where your openness comes in what you find might be inconclusive or inconsistent with your initial

thoughts on your question, but this will become part of your essay.
Organization
Somewhere near the beginning of your essay, you will include a sentence that clearly presents the driving question youre looking into.
The shape of your essay will arise from your consideration of your question, but it will be built around comparison and/or contrast. You might look at one personal

experience next to another, one school of thought next to another, one groups behavior next to another, one image next to another, or maybe a mixture of an experience

next to a school of thought, and so on. Some of you may take a variation on this to place two of your sources next to each other, examining them closely.
Your essay will end with your synthesis, not merely a summary but a gathering and consideration of what youve found, like bringing ice and tea together to make iced

tea.
Thesis
Whether at the beginning of your essay and after your question or at the end of your essay as a part of your conclusion, you will include a thesis sentence or two that

clearly answers your question as a result of your research.
Sources
For the three sources you will use for this essay, you will need to find at least one if not all three through our PCC library catalog or databases. All three will be

authoritative, whether they are from primary sources, written by experts and maybe even peer-reviewed, or whether they are written by fact-checking journalists.

Articles from Wikipedia, E-how, Ask.com and the like wont suffice. You may consider a government document or an article from a non-profit organization, consortium,

educational institution (not a student paper though), or from a magazine or newspaper that is well-respected (not People, for instance). You may also consider

something like a primary source TEDtalk or a primary source podcast.
