Chapter 11 in Real Essays explains well the main components of a solid Comparison and Contrast essay. Pay particular attention to the Four Basics of Good Comparison and Contrast chart on page 151. This essay often proves difficult, so concentrate on a solid thesis statement once you have selected your topic. Read the example essays for some different ways to approach this essay, but follow the thesis guidelines in the related file in this module.

You may choose your topic from the following:

Compare and/or contrast two coaches, bosses, or instructors.

Compare and/or contrast two office or college environments.

Compare and/or contrast good customer service and bad customer service.

Compare and/or contrast people who are technologically savvy and those who aren’t.

Please note that any student example provided may come from older classes, and instructions may have changed. In all points of difference, please follow this term’s instructions.

Your essay must be at least five paragraphs long if you follow the alternating pattern. However, if you select the block pattern, you may end up with two comprehensive body paragraphs. Remember that your reader should learn something new; try to stay away from the obvious. Your examples, though, which will prove your points, will be what makes your thesis come to life.

Once you’ve thought about your topic, decide which organizational pattern will work best (the point-by-point or alternating pattern or the whole-to-whole or block pattern).

Your thesis will clearly state the two or three points you will be comparing and may include a judgment also (one may be better than another);

Include transitional words and/or phrases to move your reader from paragraph to paragraph. See the Transitions file In this module;

Do not use the “you” pronoun;

Stay away from the grammar felonies: sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences;

Be sure to proofread it carefully to eliminate any writing errors.

Length:

Your essay will include an introduction, a conclusion, and three body paragraphs. Each body paragraph will provide examples to prove your thesis statement. Your word count will fall between 700-800 words.

Brief Introduction: Your intention in the introduction is twofold: to grab your reader’s interest and to clearly state what you will prove in your body paragraphs. There are several ways to begin, and you may already have a favorite technique. It could be a short anecdote, or a definition, or even a question, for example. The introduction should end with a clear thesis statement, informing your reader exactly what you will compare or contrast in your body paragraphs and preferably the three points of comparison.

Three Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph should provide concrete examples to demonstrate what you mean by each of the comparison points mentioned in your thesis. You should do this in the order mentioned in the thesis. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that indicates what you will compare in the body paragraph.

Brief Conclusion: Summarize your key points. The conclusion should be no more than two or three sentences.

Point of View:

Use the third-person (ex. he, she, they, it) point of view. You may use plural first-person pronouns if they are appropriate. For example, you may say in our society. You don’t need to say I think or I believe because these ideas will be all of your own thoughts in your own words. Don’t use you, your, or yours. Second-person pronouns shouldn’t be used in formal academic writing.

Tone:

Your tone should be serious for this essay. You must use objective, impartial, unbiased language. (No exclamation marks, inflammatory words, etc.)

Diction:

Choice of words should be suitable for a college-educated audience. For example, o.k. kids, and mom should be revised (acceptable, children, mother). Do not use contractions (ex. don’t, can’t, it’s). Don’t use informal abbreviations, such as etc.

GRADING CRITERIA

Does the content in your paper meet the objectives of the assignment?

Is the essay arranged in the point-by-point or whole-to-whole format?

Are your body paragraphs focused and organized? Is the paper well organized?

Does the paper follow the formatting instructions?

Is there a descriptive title?

Are second person pronouns avoided (you, your, yours)?
