07 May CONSIDER AND DISCUSS YOUR AWARENESS OF YOUR CLAIM IN THE CONTEXT OF MILLS AND KANT.

Project description
Ethical Arguments (“X is Right (Wrong)”)
Ethical arguments are tricky. They force us to define problems, make decisions, and judge outcomes. Very often they are matters of life and death: should we go to war or should we spend more money on AIDS research? They require us to look at our ways of living, our living practices and choices within a global economy. They ask us to make judgments about communities, not merely ourselves.
I would suggest that you first decide where you fall on the argument between Mills and Kant. Should we decide what is morally good based upon what is best for the greatest number, or should we decide on principle that the ends never justify the means even if the means require us to murder someone or watch them die? I would consider these two arguments closely and decide whether you will use on of them or both of them. Consider both the principle and consequences of your argument, or claim.
You may want to argue, for example, that a four-day workweek is morally good. You may want to say that it creates a healthier, happier population, which in the long run will make for less crime, and social disintegration. A four-day workweek might also increase production, while reinforcing the value of the family. Some economists will surely argue that a four-day workweek will be too expensive, but you might want to point to Europe’s example.
More than any other argument this semester this paper will require that you look closely at opposing arguments. Consider them carefully. You are arguing for whole communities, not just yourself.
Your paper should follow MLA format and include at least two to five sources. Classical argument:
I. Introduction: Introduce your claim “X is Right or Wrong.” Describe the problem.
II. Body: Consider and discuss your awareness of your claim in the context of Mills and Kant. Argue your because clauses one at a time, utilizing topic sentences.
III. Summarize opposing arguments and refute them.
