12868Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Brown University’s Cultural Property: SummaryLinks to an external site. webpage and Stelios Lekakis’s chapter The Cultural Property DebateLinks to an external site..
In this course, you have studied works of literature, philosophy, theology, visual art, architecture, and music from the fifteenth century to the present. You have examined diverse perspectives and utilized the components of critical thinking to determine the significance of historical and sociological developments. The final paper allows you to bring together the different elements of the course and demonstrate your ability to analyze a contemporary issue critically.
This course has explored the art and artifacts of the world’s cultures. These items have shed light on the development of the human story and highlighted the characteristics and concerns of specific historical periods. The value of these items to our understanding of the human condition is undisputed; however, their ownership, as well as the ownership of other items of cultural heritage, such as human remains, is a matter of continuing controversy. Arguments around which stakeholders (individuals, ethnic groups, countries, and humanity as a whole) should have control of art and artifacts have sparked legal challenges and led to legislation that defines and protects cultural property.
Topic of the paper will be Rosetta Stone.
Use the six steps of critical thinking to address the following question: Who should have ownership of the item?
Step 1: Describe the issue.
In the paper’s introductory paragraph, explain the issue by identifying the item you will discuss and the main aspects of the controversy about its ownership. Conclude with a thesis statement that makes an argument in the third person about the ownership of the item. See Writing a Thesis StatementLinks to an external site. and First vs. Third PersonLinks to an external site. from the Writing Center for assistance. The argument should reflect your personal position.
Step 2: Define the different positions, perspectives, and beliefs about the issue. In this step, discuss at least two opposing positions, state who holds each position, and provide a brief statement of each position.
Step 3: Evaluate the evidence. In this step, state the evidence used to support each position and weigh the credibility and relevance of the evidence.
Step 4: Compare positions. In this step, objectively compare and contrast positions, arguments, and ideas. Determine what positions, arguments, and ideas should be included in the final analysis. Assess the implications of the various positions.
Step 5: Explain your personal position. In this step, develop a personal position and present it in the third person. Present evidence for your position, discuss counterarguments and weaknesses in your position, and assess potential implications of your position.
Step 6: Draw conclusions and discuss further questions. In the concluding paragraph, summarize your personal position in a sentence. Explain how your personal position could lead to continuing analysis of the issue. Determine what additional resources could shed further light on the issue. Discuss what questions remain to be answered.
