You may elect to answer ONE of the following questions:

QUESTION 1:

(i) Research and analyse the conduct of ONE of the following high-profile projects/programmes:

a) The London 2012 Legacy Programme
b) UK Home Office e-Borders Programme (2007-2014)
c) The BBC W1 Programme (Phases 1 & 2)
d) TfL London Congestion Charge project
e) Building Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) project

Then:

(ii) Discuss what is meant by ‘successful’ and whether the project/ programme you have selected was OR was NOT considered successful, (20 marks)

(iii) Analyse and discuss some of the factors or practices that contributed to this outcome (successful/not successful). To what extent are these a result of good/poor project/programme strategy? Illustrate your answer with examples from the case study and theory. (20 Marks)

(iv) Suggest how utilisation of programme or project ‘best practice or theory’ either contributed to the success or might have improved the situation/ avoided the problems. (30 Marks)

QUESTION 2:

There is a substantive body of PPM literature which examines the factors affecting project success. One widely cited model is that of Pinto and Slevin (1988a), (1988b) and their empirical work on studying project success in a variety of organisational and industry contexts.

(i) Critically review the literature and the 10-factor model developed by Pinto and Slevin. (20 Marks)
(ii) Choose 3 of these factors and discuss them with reference to a project you have been involved in, or one from industry with which you are familiar.

(iii) To what extent can the PM influence or manage the 10 factors to improve the chances of a successful implementation? Discuss this question with reference to a project you have been involved in, or one from industry with which you are familiar. (35 marks
