You may post a news story that relates in some way to physical anthropology. Since physical anthropology touches on so many aspects of humans, there are a huge number of subjects that would qualify. To view a sample post following, see the first post on “junk DNA” authored by me under “Genetics and Evolution.”
1. Find a recent article (less than 2 years old) relating in some way to physical anthropology. The article must come from a reputable news source such as the New York Times, Time Magazine or “National Geographic News.” It should be long and “meaty” enough so that you can provide a decent summary of it. The article must be on an original topic, one not previously posted about on that board, nor linked to in any of the online lectures.
2. In approximately 150-200 words, state in your own words what the article is about, and most importantly, how it relates to physical anthropology and/or issues discussed in the class. The first line of your post should be an active web link to the article (use the globe icon to create a hyperlink). If you aren’t able to do that, make sure the complete web address is listed so that readers can find the article.

This article reports on recent research that supports a link between non-coding DNA and heart disease in humans. This finding comes from two studies. A study in 2007 examined the genomes of several thousand people and found an association between mutations of non-coding DNA located on Chromosome 9 and higher rates of coronary artery disease. In the latest study, researchers genetically altered the same region of non-coding DNA in mice. Those mice suffered narrowing of the arteries, and also higher rates of tumors and early deaths.
Researchers have concluded that the non-coding DNA seems to influence two genes that control cell division in the heart and neighboring tissues. For example, a malfunction in one of these genes might result in production of too many muscle cells in the aorta, obstructing blood flow to the heart.
This research is relevant to Anthropology and to our course, because we have previously discussed how DNA (genes) provide the code for proteins that build and maintain the body. In Chapter 3, it was mentioned that non-coding (non-genic) DNA doesn’t play a role in protein synthesis. However, far from just being “junk”, this DNA plays an important role in regulating how those genes are expressed.
