03 May DESCRIBE HOW THE HOLY DAY IS CELEBRATED DIFFERENTLY IN THE DIFFERENT CULTURES.
You can pick either the topic of 1) Conversion to Buddhism, including the practice of meditation and retreats, or 2) Sexual misconduct/overindulgence or 3) Homosexuality as it relates specifically to Buddhism or 4) name/pick your own topic. Put the topic at the start of your writing so I know which of the 4 topics you did. Address all of the following items in 200 words as 1/3 of your assignment. You only do ONE of these options–the other 400 words will be on the 2 other options in the links BELOW this one in the module.
Identify and write down some questions of your own regarding conversion and mediation, sex, or homosexuality, or your topic as they relate to Buddhism. Overall, what are some stereotypes or thoughts you had about Buddhists or their beliefs on this topic before you started researching it? Had you heard of or thought about the topic before you picked it?
Now search for an article on your topic. From your search, which article did you find most compelling of the ones you saw and why did it catch your interest? Try not to use articles that someone else has already used. Cut and paste the address of the article in this part of your response so that others (me included) can reference it.
Were your initial thoughts about the topic upheld or incorrect? How so? What did you learn from the research? What were you surprised by or questions you have/want to learn more about…What is a connection to something in your life, experience, education or culture that you can relate this to? (Example: Have you ever meditated? Do you have an experience with something similar? What are the benefits? Is this for everyone? Do you see any drawbacks? What is the appeal?) Try to be clear in letting me know what info came from the article and use your own words or it will show up in Turnitin…
NO WIKIPEDIA!!!
2= Buddhist Holy Days
Buddhists have many local traditions and celebrations in various countries and ethnic groups. In most areas of the world, the holy days are synchronized with the phases of the moon. They thus vary from year to year according to the Gregorian calendar. Start here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/tools/calendar/ (Links to an external site.) (add the current year) or here:
http://buddhism.about.com/od/buddhistholidays/tp/buddhistholidays.htm (Links to an external site.) once you pick a day from the listed options below. Be specific in your final post title as to which holy day you chose!
Address all of the following items in at least 200 words as 1/3 of your assignment.
Pick 1 day and briefly tell us about the celebration in your OWN words. Be creative—add more than I am asking for here: Separately address each question–why is this day significant for Buddhists? What is it celebrating? How is it marked? What do you think about what is being celebrated and how it is being celebrated? What part did you find most interesting? What is most unusual or meaningful?
What can you relate it to in your own religious or cultural experience or what you know of other religions? Do NOT just describe Christmas in your house; engage what you know with what you are learning. Find an example of the celebration of each holy day you picked in a different culture (you may include the US as 1 culture). Provide the link to the article. Describe how the holy day is celebrated differently in the different cultures.
Your choices:
Nirvana Day (Parinirvana) is held in mid February. It commemorates the death of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha.
New Year Day (Losar in Tibet) is celebrated in mid-February in China, Korea Tibet, and Vietnam. Not a strict Holy Day, more cultural…
Wesak is the Buddhas birthday in April or May. In some traditions, it celebrates the Buddhas birth, enlightenment and death. Deal with it in your response as his birthday as other people will cover his enlightenment and death.
Khao Pansa marks the beginning of the Buddhist lent. It is the preferred day for Buddhist men in some countries to be ordained as monks. It is celebrated in the full moon of the eight lunar month, typically July.
Boun Ok Pansa marks the end of Lent. It is at the end of the rainy season, in October.
Bodhi Day, in early December, celebrates the Buddhas enlightenment in 596 BCE
Be specific in your final post title as to which one you chose!

3= lama, lama,lama
Address all of the following items in at least 200 words as 1/3 of your assignment. Some of the interviews below are dated but they give you an idea of the topics/questions I listed below. Feel free to search for the most current, newer webcasts on this site: http://www.dalailama.com/webcasts (Links to an external site.) and cut and paste the address of the specific addresses or videos you viewed.
Skim some of the Dalai Lamas messages; topics range from environment to Tibet to the practice of Dolgyal (Shugden): http://www.dalailama.com/messages/ (Links to an external site.) . Also, scan/read the following interviews: http://www.progressive.org/mag_intv0106 (Links to an external site.) http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/tib/nytimes.htm (Links to an external site.) http://www.lifepositive.com/Spirit/masters/dalai-lama/his-holiness.asp (Links to an external site.)
You are going to answer some general questions and then narrow to some of the specific topics listed below.
First, which messages and interviews did you read (list the topics)? Generally, what do you think of the Dalai Lama from these interviews and messages? What did you like or not like about what he said in his interviews? What struck you most and what did you think of it?
Choose ONE or TWO sets of questions from these topics (or create your own based on webcasts you viewed):
What are the Dalai Lamas thoughts on abortion and birth control? Overpopulation? How are these things reconciled with nonviolence?
What are the Dalai Lamas thoughts on the Pope? Other religious leaders/other religions? Jesus, Gandhi, God?
What are the Dalai Lamas thoughts on women? Women as religious beings—laity or nuns? Civil rights? Equality?
What are the Dalai Lamas thoughts on the Iraq, Afghanistan wars, violence, and thoughts on Saddam Hussein and other dictators?
What are the Dalai Lamas thoughts on happiness and compassion? Awareness? Anger? Causality (not casualty)?
What are the Dalai Lamas thoughts on China, Tibet, and his next reincarnation? Who will choose him (include China and Panchen Lama)?
OR pick your own lama or pick from these:
Forum: Lamas
In your OWN words:
What do you think of Lamas as religious leaders—do they seem like priests or shamans or rabbis—how would you access their role?
What do you think of the Lama you investigated? What are his/her credentials? Is he well-recognized, held in high esteem? Where is he followed?
What did you like and not like about what he said in his interview? What struck you most and what did you think of it? What is different or significant about this lama?
Find 1 other link on your lama from different sources…what seems to be his/her central message?
