M &B Research Project and Presentation:
Students will be expected to provide a short research project on a money, banking, financial crisis, regulatory, financial innovation, domestic or international issue of your groups choosing. Suggested topics are available on the course syllabus. Groups will be limited to four members – you can select those you would like to work with and I will randomly assign the remainder. As you choose your topic please feel free to talk to me. The purpose of the paper and presentation will be to explore a policy issue from an economic framework and to analyze the effects of the proposed solutions.
Paper
After your research has begun, analyze a solution based upon the best available evidence and propose a policy solution. Within your paper briefly outline the economic question, its’ economic impact, data (or where you would gather if you had time) and why your solution is best. These will be due on the final day of class and will be a maximum of 4 pages. Please include your sources. 10 Points from instructor Presentation- Unfortunately presentation length as dictated by class size will be very brief. Much of your challenge will be conveying your information, with all 4 students participating within 10 minutes. This assignment will demonstrate effective presentation and analytical skills, and will allow students feedback from their classmates. Presentations should achieve the following: -Present the background and history of the issue
Explain the economic effects associated with the issue (emphasis on evidence) -Present the proposed solutions from both sides of the issue, including which arguments are the most persuasive (in your opinion)
Organization will also be graded, as will visual aids to clarify your position.
Open up the topic for questions and facilitate ensuing discussion (5 minutes)

Course Description:
The objective of this quantitative intensive course is to provide a basic understanding of the monetary and financial system in an advanced market economy such as that of the US. The class begins with a discussion of what financial intermediation means and goes on to trace its historical evolution since the Great Depression. The second part of class focuses on the evolution of financial deregulation after 1980 leading to the current financial crisis. The class ends with a discussion of challenges of economic policy in the context of globalization and financial crisis. Learning Objectives- By the end of the semester you will be able to:
Recognize key aspects of Central Banking and functions of the US financial system.
Explain the evolution of financial intermediation in the economy.
Integrate knowledge of banking system and forms/uses of money from two eras into a cohesive narrative.
Detect and point out problems and weaknesses within the financial system along with inherent difficulties to fixing them.
Have developed a proposal to solve a current domestic or global financial problem. Requirements and Grading: Midterm exams: 20% Cumulative final exam: 30% Film Review: 10% Research Project/Presentation 10% Assignments, Group Activities, and Participation: 10%.
List of films to be reviewed will be provided separately. All videos are accessible online through the Marriott Library.
Assignments will vary but primarily focus on important subjects from the text and lectures. Though these will be graded they are primarily meant to prepare you for exams. These will be due prior to each exam
Research Project/Presentation- Groups of 2-3 will create and find a research project extending a comparative question/subject or related field from the film review or money and banking. This aspect of the course will be finalized as class numbers form.
