Choose a children’s book and write an analytical essay on the book. It can be a book of any genre of children’s literature. You cannot use any book that we are ready as a class.
2. The essay is to be a minimum of 3-5 pages, double-spaced with a size 12 font. Essays in other formats will not be accepted. The essay should contain a clear and observable thesis with topic sentences for each of the body paragraphs.
3. Some of the topics that should be included in the essay:
• A brief background on the author and the illustrator (if applicable).
• Background on the book, i.e. date of publication and country of publication, if it is of importance. The country of publication is only important if it is not a book published in this country. If the book was not originally published in English try to determine, to the best of your ability, if anything has been lost or changed due to translation.
• Discuss the genre, literary merits, and importance of illustrations. Please note: literary merits should be defined as reasons why the book is a valuable part of the Children’s Literature reading list). Everything that is in the textbook (particularly Chapter 1) stresses the literary merits of books. For example, it can be argued that The Outsiders is one of the first great young adult novels because it explores the theme of identity for teenagers, a subject that had not been explored up to that point.
• Critical responses to the work (minimum of one—maximum of three). Critical responses come from books, magazine articles or on-line responses to the book. I would be careful of on-line blogs about books because often times they are comprised simply of fellow readers. If you are stuck on this one it may be wise to contact a librarian at the MWCC library for assistance. I would not wait until the last moment for their help.
• You should also pay attention to the characters of the novel (characterization), themes, settings, conflicts, etc (any of the relevant terms of Chapter 2).
• Please avoid long plot summaries. Your purpose is to analyze, to explain, to prove, and to make the reader understand, ultimately, the value of this book.
4. What book to choose? That may be the single most important part of the essay. Obviously you should not choose a book that does not have enough length and/or illustrations to write about (please note if you are analyzing a book that would be dependent on illustrations you may have to include copies of the artwork in the essay). You should not choose a book that is outside the realm of children’s literature. My best boundary is anything that would be taught after 9th grade probably isn’t children’s literature per se. If in doubt, please ask.
5. Most of all, remember, that this is an essay. There should be a flow to the essay meaning that the whole essay logically connects to the thesis. The body paragraphs should not be a series of paragraphs that do not connect with the other ones.
