What does right really mean? Right can mean many different things to different people. First one should take a look at the definition of right. According to the Cambridge dictionary right means correct. For example: “If you are right about something or someone, you are correct in your judgment” (Dictonary, 2019, p. para. 3) Now everyone has there own feeling as to what is correct and how they view correctness. What you perceive as right, could be considered wrong in another’s persons eyes. For example, someone steals food to survive because they feel like they had no other choice to. They feel this is right or correct, yet you may feel this is not right. Or you feel like quoting the bible everyday is the right thing to do to profess your faith, yet others do not feel the same way. You can say that right is a part of ethics, it is what choices you feel are correct ethnically for your own being.
We all try to what is right and we tend to use our ethics that we have been taught while growing up. Such ethics are do not steal, respect one another, do not hurt anyone etc. So, it can be said that right and wrong could be the roots of good and bad ethics. “Ethics are the standard of what is right and wrong, and they are based on our values. Being ethical requires making a moral judgment, and that’s not always easy. Ethical behavior takes courage and has to be practiced.” (Kerns, 2011, p. para. 4) We are taught as children what is right and what is wrong and are encouraged to practice these through out our lives. The meaning of what is right and wrong is taught to us as what is thought to be correct by our parents, what their values are and what was taught to them.
How do we know what is right and what is wrong, well again we need to look at what was taught to us by our parents. They give us the ethical core of right and wrong according to their upbringing. Yet it is not only our parents who teach us what is right and wrong. Everyone we come into contact with has an influence in one way or another what we perceive as right and wrong. “In countless situations people attempt to advise or persuade their interlocutors that something is desirable (vs. undesirable) or right (vs. wrong).” (Giuseppe Carenini, 2006, p. 925) People tend to push their beliefs and their desirable behavior on you, so you think like they do and so what they believe is right. In the same context they will also push no desirable behavior on you as well. You may think this no desirable behavior is wrong, yet in their eyes it is right.
Ones ethical view and what they believe is right or wrong carry over to one’s religious or non-religious views as well. For the most part some one who is religious is taught to believe that Christianity is right and one who do not have religious views is wrong. Not the case, “Given the differing ideals for moral judgment and what constitutes right and wrong among non-religious consumers, it is reasonable to assume that non-religious consumers will not view ethical behavior as ubiquitous across all individuals; instead, it is expected that judgments of morality and ethics will vary to a greater degree than among religious consumers.” (Elizabeth A. Minton, 2018, p. 770) One most stay true to what their ethical belief are what they perceive is right and not be fooled by what others say or think. “Do Not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” Come back to your sense as you ought and stop dinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God-say this to your shame.” (1Corinthians 15:33-34, NIV)
