Girlfriend- A norm for me as a girlfriend is that I check in with my boyfriend and make sure that we are on the same page. We do spend a lot of time together but when we don’t, we like to keep in touch. As a girlfriend, I make it my duty to make sure that Arthur knows what I am doing in order to keep the trust between us.

Roommate- As a roommate, it is a norm to clean up after myself. Doing so shows that I respect my roomates space and want to keep everything clean and healthy. When my roommate does not do his part, I tend to give him a day or two and then that action is complete. Having a roommate takes a lot of patience and I see that he is patient with me as well so I give him the benefit of the doubt at times.

Nanny- As a nanny to two wonderful children, it is important for me to be on time. It is a norm for me to pick up the kids at school at a specific time and to communicate with the parents if something happens.

Younger sister- A norm as a younger sister my whole life has been to show my sister’s that I look up to them. I often will send them a text with a question every once in a while to show them that I love them and to also genuinely care about what they think about a certain topic.

Woman- As a woman, it is a norm to be a caretaker. I fall into the roll. I love taking care of household chores like laundry, dishes, etc. Now, this is a stereotypical thing, but I do actually enjoy doing these things and I am darn good at it! 🙂

Yogi-A norm for a person who does yoga is that they are relaxed, existential in the mind, and meditative. I would say that even when I am feeling stressed, I still like to give off a relaxed vibe for my own sanity. There a lot of things that happen in life that we can not control. The thing that I can control, though, is my approach/ reaction to it. This is a norm that I follow as a yogi- the relaxed vibe.

Californian (San Jose native but LA living now)- I think a norm of a person that live in California is that they are open-minded (for the most part). I would say that I fall into this category because I am very open to everything. I find that differences between human beings is what makes life interesting and that it is the essence of life to relate to people with differences rather than needing to agree with each other all the time. Openness and perspective is everything.

Make a list of all the groups you identify with. Consider nationality, ethnicity, geographic region, interests, and hobbies (e.g., U.S., German-American, Californian, surfers, and skiers.)

Hello my fellow classmates. The groups that I identify with usually don to mesh together. For example, not only am I an avid motorcycle rider but I am also a gamer, sports fan and military. Usually you are one or the other of the first three groups that I have mentioned.

Motorcycle group– Social motorcyclist organizations are popular and are sometimes organized geographically, focus on individual makes, or even specific models. Example of motorcycle clubs include American Motorcyclist Association, Harley Owners Group and BMW MOA. Many social motorcycle organizations raise money for charities as a secondary activity, through organized events and rides, and others exist primarily as social benefit organizations, such as Bikers Against Child Abuse. In most cases, motorcycles groups are just individuals who want to get together and ride.

Gamer – Games have been played for a long, long time now. Remember those countless hours we spent playing Pacman on the arcades or playing Pokémon on our Gameboy Colors as children? Opposed to non-gamers, gamers have better visuo-motor coordination, spatial representation, iconic skill, and visual attention. Furthermore, recently there’s been a change in focus in the gaming world, where people have had an interest in using games for a purpose other than just entertainment. They are called serious games, and the purposes are related to helping with problems in fields such as health care, education, and more. So, despite what our parents may have said to us, it’s looking like all those hours we spent and are continuing to spend on video games are not a waste. Not only is it fun and relaxing, but games are starting to change the world beyond from just entertaining us on our sofas.

Sports fan – A lot of people get together with friends to watch sports in times they otherwise might not see them, and I know no fewer than eight guys whose primary talking point with their fathers is sports. Sports isn’t replacing other, more worthwhile topics of conversation between those sons and fathers, it’s just adding a level of closeness that would not be there without it. There aren’t too many times in life you can celebrate something with complete strangers and feel an emotional connection with your community. People love this feeling, that’s why Christmas songs make everyone happy. When they play in public all December, it’s like we’re all in holiday mode together. The key is that sports creates an “us versus them” structure, which allows people to be part of a collective “us,” where the us can triumph or fail all together. In tribal times, the concept of “us versus them” was highly pronounced in a tangible way—today, especially in huge countries, it’s not. Sports is an artificial way to bring some more collective “us” into our lives.

Military – Military personnel are held to a stricter standard than your average American. DoDD 5500.7, Standards of Conduct, provides guidance to military personnel on standards of conduct and ethics. Violations of the punitive provisions by military personnel can result in prosecution under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Military who violate these standards, even if such violations do not constitute criminal misconduct, are subject to administrative actions, such as reprimands. Ethics are standards by which one should act based on values. Values are core beliefs such as loyalty duty, honor, and integrity that motivate attitudes and actions. Not all values are ethical values. Ethical values relate to what is right and wrong and thus, take precedence over non-ethical values when making ethical decisions.

Which groups’ norms do you follow most often?

I have spent 18 and half years in the United States Army. The ethics and code of conduct has been drilled into to me day in and day out. I eat, breath and drink the military lifestyle. Even though we are not perfect and have our own problem children, military personnel are some of the most professional experts that I have had a pleasure working with and by far it is this groups norm that I follow the most.

I am doing my discussion post on climate change but more directly about Chinas influence on climate change. The English article that I read is from the Washington Post. it is titled “Why is China suddenly leading the climate change effort? Its a business decision.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/06/22/why-is-china-suddenly-leading-the-climate-change-effort-its-a-business-decision/?utm_term=.1af822efece7 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Then for the article from a foreign country I used one from China. I thought that it would be entertaining to see how the articles differ from us to them. The newspaper that I used from China is called the China Daily. The article I used is called, “Climate change increases conflict risk, flooding, and hunger.”

I think the biggest difference that I saw was how the Chinese paper tries to scare the citizens into believing climate change rather then the American paper just pushes out information. I think this is because the Chinese government learned how they can make money off of changing how many emissions they push out of their factories as well as the amount of greenhouse gasses. The Chinese article made it seem as if it is something that has to happen right away, and I believe it is so that they are able to make the numbers they said they would reach by the year 2030.
