Dr. King was known to be a political and moral leader that fought against the oppression toward African Americans in the mid-1900s. He was not only known because of this success, but also because of his methods. Violence is the quick and simple solution people typically turn to, but Dr. King advocated a nonviolent protest strategy through his years of fighting for his people’s right. Marable & Mullings (2009) stated, “Violence solves no social problems; it merely creates new and more complicated ones.” (p. 378). The use of violence only makes things more chaotic. It may solve the issue in the short run, but it fuels up the victims to fight back, also using violence, which continues a cycle of hatred. Dr. King knew that if African American were ever going to be treated equally, they would have to treat their oppressors accordingly. Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolence consisted of five to six major principals. First, he did not see this method as cowardice. His nonviolent resistance was just as powerful as a violent one, just without unnecessary physical damage. Second, he wanted to gain friendship and understanding with his enemies rather than defeat and humiliation. Third was that the revolt was directed at forces of evil rather than the actual persons. The fourth was that it avoided internal violence of the spirit. Lastly, Dr. King used this method of nonviolence based on the belief that the universe was on the side of justice.
During the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Dr. King’s method of nonviolent protest proved to be effective to end bus segregation. This movement began when Robinson and Parks were treated unfairly on city buses because of their skin color. After Parks was arrested, a city-wide boycott of the buses began. African American were a large portion of the clientele for the city buses and lead to a heavy deficit. Eventually, judges announced that the constitutionality of segregated seating was to end, but that did not take place until months later when the US Supreme Court supported the district court’s ruling. Although it took many months, the nonviolent protest proved to be effective. Dr. King also strongly spoke out against the Vietnam War. He said it his speech, “If we do not stop our war against the people of Vietnam immediately the world will be left with no other alternative than to see this as some horribly clumsy and deadly game we have decided to play.” (pg. 444). Dr. King advocated for nonviolence and was thus against this war. He describes the atrocity of war as a “game” and “playing” to create the allusion that all this fighting was useless and childish. Important issues should not be fixed through violence but instead through non-physical conflict that can be much more powerful and lasting.
Dr. King advocated a nonviolent protest strategy for a couple of reasons. One of which is that he did not want to humiliate or defeat the opponent, he wanted to befriend them. This creates a feeling of understanding among the protesters and white people. On page 378 of Let Nobody Turn Us Around, it mentions that nonviolent protests are meant to “awaken a sense of moral shame in the opponent.” It essentially makes them feel bad because they can see that the protesters are not fighting physically and there is no real reason why they should not be given the same liberties. He did not want to give the whites a reason to fight them on it. The sooner they realized that the African American people were not bad people, the better. The best way to convince them of this is to be peaceful.
In my opinion, this was incredibly successful. Although a year seems to be a long time to desegregate the bus system, it was actually pretty quick. By thinking that the African Americans were oppressed since they arrived in America, one year to achieve desegregation of the busses is not too bad. With the Vietnam War, Dr. King made a point to say that even though African Americans are not even able to sit in the same schools or restaurants, they are still more than willing to defend and fight for the country they love. African Americans bring just as much skill and effort to the cause as anyone else. He also mentioned that even though in America the races cannot sit in the same school together, on TV they all “kill and die together (M. L. King, 1967, pp.440).” Everyone at home was able to see the unity on the battlefield and I think it sparked a moral obligation in the white population. Over some time, this helped bring them together. Martin Luther King Jr was able to light up a nation that was so divided and bring them a few steps closer together. Over time, the population was able to see the benefits of nonviolent protests and peace
