Decisions are something we make every day, no matter how big or small it is. But some of them are very important, and it could change our life. Those decisions we should be carful about it. Even sometimes we have to ask other people who might have more life experience to hear them opinion. I believe when it come to a fateful decisions, we should do whatever beneficial to our self no matter how it is look like as long as we don’t hurt others.
In 2013 I received an offer from a channel called “France 24” to work with them on an assignment, I accepted their offer and packed my bags for my trip, my trip to Syria. I saw it as a chance to gain experience and I was excited about the new step my career was taking. It was an adventure that was mine for the taking, and going into the unknown, I took it. None of my parents encourage me, even my mom was mad of that because she was thinking it is too dangerous to go there. But I took a chance to this new experience in my career.
when I arrived Damascus it was no walk in the park, it was a dangerous war zone, with signs of death and devastation all around. During my first moment I saw fierce fighting . There were three random shooting outbreaks that I remember in first day. We stayed at small hotel in the middle of the downtown, that area was under the Syrian military control. Our job was to do many reports about the civil war including the chemicals attack in Idlib. Next day we had to drive to Idlib, which about three hours drive. As press team we were moving with the United Nation team in them vehicles. Even the way was so scary and so many buildings has been destroyed, but everyone told us we are safe especially while we using UN vehicles and have security guard.
Once we got there, we start hearing the bombs explosive. We know already this city was one of the hottest spot in the war. We went to the one of the hospital first, the emergency was so crowded, I saw a lot of injuries people sitting on the ground waiting for help. My supervisor asked me and the rest of our team to start filming. After ten minutes, one of the doctors give us a statement about the situation, I still remember he told us they receive more than hundred injury every day in the last week and there are many of them attacked by chemical weapon.
Then we left the hospital heading to one of the biggest school in the city, which was turned as shelter for people who lost them houses. The school was so packed, people sleep next each other, and they don’t have enough water and food. We did another report there, including statement from the local leader. It was about 3:30 pm, we decided to go have a lunch at our car. While we sitting in the car we heard very loud explosive, it was only a few block a way. We got scared, but I suggested to my team to go check it out, we will have a good chance for an exclusive news. We drove a round the block, then we saw the car just been bombed in front of government building. We start filming and looking for someone to get any statement. Few minutes later, we start hearing massive shooting in short distance. We start running back to our car to drive back to the school. But the way was blocked from two pick up truck. Then a guy look in his thirty come to our car, we were scared to death. He told us in very calm way, ‘we not going to hurt you if you going to help us”. None of us say any word for minute, then he asked again in more serious way, “who is in charge here, and for who are you working”. Then I told him we don’t have any one in charge, we just a small team working together. I just tried to not let him putt all the pressure one person, then one of us told him, we work for France 24 tv.
Then in a nice way, he asked us to follow his car to his office. We had no choice, there were a bout ten guys with a lot of weapon. He drove in front of us while the other pickup truck behind us. We end at the back of huge building, look like an old factory. We went inside, the guy who spoke with us introduce himself as the leader of his group, who they fighting against the Assad military. Then he asked us if we would like drink some tea. However, I asked him about how can we help, he said “you are not French or any other western country citizens, so no one will care about your life expect your family, this world care only about white people life, that’s why your France 24 didn’t sent them citizens here to not risk them life”. Then I said, so what, why we here, we will do whatever you want, just let us go. He said if you make a report about how the Assad military destroy the city using a chemical weapon and I will give an evidence for that, in addition tell the world we not a terrorist, we just try to protect our children and fighting for our right.
We did what he asked about, then we sent it to our office in Jordan and told them the situation, We asked them to not delete anything, because our life will be in risk if this happen. The office did exactly what we asked them. At the 8 pm news we all see the report on TV. After that they let us go. We left Idlib back to Damascus. Once we get there, I told my supervisor, I am leaving back home, I will not risk my life again, and the Assad military will be mad already about us for the report. He told me our job not over yet, I told him I already made my decision and I am leaving now. I left the hotel with my luggage. I saw a police car a round, I asked them if they can help me to get the border with Jordan, they refused, I offered them 500 dollar, with big smile they agree. Five hours later I arrived my home. Next day, the office call me to say, our team in Syria got bombed and lost one of them.
Two years later I found myself without job. I back to my childhood dream to move to U.S. I told my parents about my plan. They didn’t like it. As usual, I told them this my life and my future. After I realized student visa will be best way to move to U.S. I start the process. The biggest issue I had was to get a bank statement for twenty thousand dollar as a financial approve for the school and the embassy. I checked all my options, but noon work out. Me and my parents were not have this amount of money. Then my friend told me he can fake a bank statement for me, and no one will find out. I took a chance since no other choice left. My dad got mad of that, and told me that’s a fraud. Next day, my friend gave to me the fake bank statement. I start the visa processing immediately. After three week I got my student visa to U.S.
