19 Jul English Paper Essay
Your third major paper will be what is commonly known as a compare and contrast essay. This is not just a variant of a descriptive essay. It is a form of reasoning designed to properly discriminate between two objects which have a mix of similarities and differences. It is a form of argument. In a reading will have next week on the topic of argument, the author says this:
“Rather than an either/or proposition, argument is multiple and complex. An argument can be logical, rational, emotional, fruitful, useful, and even enjoyable. As a matter of fact, the idea that argument is necessary (and therefore not always about war or even about winning) is an important notion in a culture that values democracy and equity. In America, where nearly everyone you encounter has a different background and/or political or social view, skill in arguing seems to be paramount, whether you are inventing an argument or recognizing a good one when you see it” (Jones 160).
And indeed, one of the most common forms of argument, and one in which you engage daily, is to compare and contrast.
In this essay you will select two things — these may be objects, ideas, songs, people, sports, whatever you like —and make one of three arguments about them as outlined in the Longman Writer: “(1) that one thing is better than another . . . (2) that things that seem different are actually alike . . .; (3) that things that seem alike are actually different” (299). This is not an exemplification essay; in other words, you are not just to describe the differences and similarities, but arrive at a judgment about the two things. Prior to beginning work you should refer to the Longman Writer pp 298 – 306, and the example essays which follow. Another good reference for this type of essay is found at the UNC Writing Center’s website, which suggests a novel prewriting technique: the Venn diagram. The illustrating below comes from a web article in which the assignment was to select the best of two pizza shops through a process of compare and contrast. Here the writer begins by illustrating what is different about the two shops as well as what is similar.

You may not find such an approach appropriate, particularly if you chose to “draw an analogy between two seemingly unrelated subjects. An analogy is an imaginative comparison that delves beneath the surface differences of subjects in order to expose their significant and often unsuspected similarities or differences” (Nadell 303). As such an analogy has few if any surface similarities.
The goal of this exercise is to use a particular persuasive means – compare and contrast – in order to make a point to a notional audience through composition. You may also incorporate graphics in this essay if you wish.
