7-8 pages. 35% of your final grade.
Due Date: May 14
In both Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, the protagonists come of age by finding their voices and speaking out against injustice and abuses of power. For your second assignment, write an essay that compares both novels and explores the role that one of following topics plays in the protagonists’ coming of age:
Power and Resistance
Friendship and Betrayal
Trauma and Recovery
Silence and Truth Telling
Societal Messaging and Adolescent Self-Image
When writing about the novels, you should consider the young adult audience they were written for and think about the messages that the authors want to convey to young people.
How to Write the Essay
In this essay, you should create an argument in relation to one of the topics listed above. This argument should be expressed in a thesis statement placed in the introduction to your essay. Your thesis should clearly and concisely express both your position and the reasons for your position. As this is a literary analysis paper, your overall argument should be about what the novels say about the topic you are discussing.
In the body of the essay, you should support your thesis statement by closely analyzing the text. Your essay should contain short quotes from the text and secondary sources.
Using Secondary Sources
In this essay, you should engage with at least one secondary source on one or both novels. You should tell the reader how the argument made by the relates to your own argument in the essay. By doing this, you will situate your essay within a wider critical conversation about Young Adult Literature. I have listed some examples of secondary sources you can use on the novels below. Note: At least one of the sources that you use must be peer reviewed.
Alsup, Janet. “Politicizing Young Adult Literature: Reading Anderson’s Speak as a Critical Text.” Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, vol. 47, no. 2, 2003, pp. 158–66.
Diamond, Anna. “The Hate U Give Enters the Ranks of Great YA Novels.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 29 Mar. 2017, www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/03/the-hate-u-give-angie-thomas-review/521079/.
McGee, Chris. “Why Won’t Melinda Just Talk about What Happened? Speak and the Confessional Voice.” Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, vol. 34, no. 2, 2009, pp. 172–187.
O’Quinn, Elaine J. “Between Voice and Voicelessness: Transacting Silence in Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak.” ALAN Review, vol. 29, no. 1, 2001, pp. 54–58.
All references to the novel and secondary sources must be cited using MLA format.
