Parent of a child ages 2-8 with a disability + Professional
Part A: Interview a parent/guardian/primary caregiver with a child with a disability between the
ages of two and eight years.
Write an introduction: Where did the interview take place, time of day, who was present? Did you
know the parent before the interview, and if so, in what capacity? If not, how did you become
acquainted with the parent? What did you already know about the child and his/her family? Indicate
whether the answers were verbatim (transcribed from a tape—use quotation marks to indicate this in
the Q & A section below)—if permission was granted to tape the conversation—or based on notes
and memory.
Q & A: Report the actual interview in a Question and Answer format: Q _________ and

Write a brief, objective summary of what you learned about the child and his/her family.
Part B: With parental permission, interview a professional who is or has worked with the child
and/or his/her family.

whether you already knew this professional or if this is your first meeting. Indicate whether the
answers were verbatim (transcribed from a tape—and indicate this with quotation marks in the Q &
A section below)—if permission was granted to tape the conversation—or based on notes and
memory.
Q & A: Report the actual interview in a Question and Answer format. (Remember to indicate
verbatim answers by using quotation marks.)
Write an objective summary of what you learned about the child and about the professional’s role
in the child’s life.
Part C: End with a comparison of the each individual’s perceptions and reflect on what you
learned from this experience, both personally and professionally. As a final portion of this Part, include any recommendations for continuing or adding services or supports that the child and/or his/her family need or might benefit from. If you have additional information (that you have first-hand
knowledge of and it is relevant) about the child and/or the family, you may include that in this final section of Part C, only.
