Nosocomial infections are becoming serious health treats within healthcare system because the disinfection and sterilization in hospitals, is of increasing concern. Nosocomial infections can be defined as those occurring within 48 hours of hospital admission, 3 days of discharge or 30 days of an operation. They affect 1 in 10 patients admitted to hospital (Revelas, 2012).
Intensive care is a risk factor for the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria have overtaken Gram-negative organisms as the predominant cause of nosocomial infections. Inadequate antibiotic therapy is associated with poor outcome and particularly with bacterial resistance. Infection control measures are important for the effective control, prevention and treatment of infection. Shorter duration of treatment and correct dosage of antibiotic therapy is recommended to reduce the selection pressure for resistant isolates. Hand washing is the single most important measure to prevent nosocomial infections. Gloves must not be used as a substitute for hand washing; they must be washed on glove removal (Revelas, 2012).
An efficient way to educate the public in general for the prevention of transmission of different diseases is to create television commercials, offering guidance in hospitals, educational brochures with information on how to take care of ourselves. I think that with so much technology in the era in which we live and with so much information accessible to the entire world, there is still a lot to do. But the whole system or the health care system should educate the public, in general, letting us know about different diseases, viruses or bacterial infection. A lot of people don’t know about various conditions until they get sick. I see that it is not given the proper importance of maybe the correct follow up of how to stay healthy to prevent any disease. To reinforce the importance of merely washing our hands, we can avoid contracting many diseases.

Nosocomial infections are infections that are healthcare-associated infections that are associated with hospitals and make up about 1.7 million infections and about 99,000 deaths per year. These infections have three elements just like any other infections, the host which would be the hospital patient, source of hospital pathogens and a way for the pathogen to be transmitted. These infections are becoming more serious health threats within healthcare systems because proper sterilization techniques are not used. These infections are spread by direct contact between healthcare providers and patients, indirect contact between providers and patients and the final way, which is also the most common, is the use of instruments that are not sterile. The chance of obtaining a nosocomial infection can be decreased by following sterilization processes. Proper hand washing techniques, sterilization processes for utensils used as well as cleaning patient rooms will be the most beneficial to decrease the spreading of nosocomial infections.
