Next, you may click on either “Explore the Map”…….OR you may enter in a zip code into the second box, “Search CrimeReports”.
Select a specific area on the map. Note, feel free to choose your neighborhood, the BC campus, or any specific geographic location of your choosing within Washington State.
Note, the closer you zoom in on the map, the more detailed the data will be.
Once you have honed in on a specific area, provide a description of your geographic boundaries. Be sure to select a minimum of a ten block radius.
For example……
“I chose the White Center area of Seattle. The boundaries I examined were as follows: Roxbury St to the North, SW 112th St to the South, 12th Ave SW to the East, and 35th Ave SW to the West”.
Next, provide a description of the events that occurred in your selected area. On the left hand side of the page, it will typically provide a total number of “incidents in this area”. You will also notice various bubbles on the map indicated by various images such as a car, a whistle, a ring, a firecracker, a fist, etc. Clicking on one of these icons will pull up an incident report on the right hand side of the page.
For your eExercise assignment, select an area that has a minimum of five incidents that occurred within your geographic area and then list these events. Clicking on the incident in the right hand menu will also provide additional detail such as the agency of origin, a description of the crime, the case number, etc.
The last element that you will capture for this eExercise is the “Incident Trend” data which is located at the top of the right hand page. You should see little graphs broken down by “Violent”, “Property”, and “Quality of Life”.
Record these numbers as shown on your map.
For example, Violent = 16, Property = 38, Quality of Life = 1.
