21 May Final
The final project for this course is the creation of a fabric story for a specific end use that incorporates all of the teaching components in this class. The final project is a PowerPoint presentation that includes 1 to 2 slides for each of the milestones for a total of 7 to 12 slides. The final product represents an authentic demonstration competency, because it challenges the student to apply the knowledge gained from each module into a real-world scenario. The project is divided into six milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Three, Five, Six, and Seven.
Main Elements 1. Section 1: Target Market 2. Section 2: Fabric Research
3. Section 3: Fabric Specifications 4. Section 4: Color Story
5. Section 5: Finishes, Care, and Quality
Format Milestone #1: Target Market
In 2-3 Final Project: Milestone #1: Target Market, you will submit market research of a specific segment of the population. The student will choose a specific segment of the population, or the target market, in which demographic and psychographics will be researched, and a target market overview will be developed. This target market should be specific to a job or lifestyle (e.g., stay-at- home parent, construction worker, student, athlete, executive assistant, retail associate). Very broad target markets will be difficult to define for this project (e.g., women aged 25 to 50). Visuals should also be included to further enhance the overall image. Research should be compiled and presented in a PowerPoint presentation (1 to 2 slides).
The following points should be covered in the presentation:
1. What is the segment that you have chosen?
2. What is the age range? Generation? 3. What is their family structure? Single, married, kids?
4. Where do they live?
5. What is their income?
6. Where do they shop? What is the basic price range? How much would they spend? 7. What types of clothing does your segment wear on a daily basis (e.g., jeans, sweatpants, suits)? Make sure you include
visuals in your presentation of typical clothing worn by your segment.
As you research these answers, remember that these attributes are important, as they give an indication of expendable income, fabric properties that would be needed, and quality that is needed/demanded by your segment.
A title and reference page should also be created in this milestone for your presentation. The assignment will not be graded; however, feedback will be given with corrections to be made and included in the final draft.
Milestone #2: Fabric Research
In 3-4 Final Project: Milestone #2: Fabric Research, you will submit audit findings of fabrics from the chosen target market. The target market’s buying habits will be researched. Typical fiber contents, fabric structures, dyes, prints, and finishes, as well as overall quality and care instructions will be analyzed and summarized for approximately eight fabrics (three to four complete outfits). This summary will give an overall picture of the types of fabrics the target market prefers for their apparel needs. The use of the internet and catalogs will be able to give more specific information of this kind. Visuals should be included to further enhance the overall image. A general idea or feel is the outcome for this assignment. The format should be in a PowerPoint presentation (1 to 2 slides).
The following points should be covered in the presentation:
1. What are the fabric structures preferred by your target market (e.g., knit or woven)? This is where the internet will be able to help if you are not sure. Most retail sites have this information in their product description.
2. What are the types of fabrics preferred (e.g., denim, chino, slinky)? Again, the internet is a good resource here, or use the
swatch book to find a fabric that is similar.
3. What are the fiber contents? Are there preferred fiber/fibers for your target market? Are they natural, synthetics, or a blend? 4. Is there an overall quality level that is preferred? Does your target market want cheaper garments that last one season, or do
they buy quality garments that are timeless and will last years? You can also relate fabric quality to price. The higher the price,
the higher the quality.
5. What are the general care instructions for the fabrics? Are they easy care such as machine wash, tumble dry, or are there special instructions the customer has to follow (e.g., dry clean, line dry, or do not wash)?
This assignment will not be graded; however, feedback will be given with corrections to be made and included in the final draft.
Milestone #3: Fabric Specifications
In 5-4 Final Project: Milestone #3: Fabric Specifications, you will submit fabric specifications for eight fabrics. The eight fabrics will be chosen from the swatch book and should be appropriate to your target market. The format should be in the table below in a PowerPoint presentation of 1 slide.
Swatch Number
Fabric Name Fiber Content Yarn Type Weave/Knit Type
Yarns/Stitches per Inch
Method of Coloration*
Finish**
*This column is to be completed in Milestone Four.
**This column is to be completed in Milestone Five.
This assignment will not be graded; however, feedback will be given with corrections to be made and included in the final draft.
Milestone #4: Color Story
In 6-5 Final Project: Milestone #4: Color Story, you will submit dye and print specifications for the eight chosen fabrics. These specifications will be included on the previous table from Evaluate 5.1. You will also submit a discussion and visual examples on types of dyes and prints that are preferred by your target market.
The following points should be covered in the presentation.
1. What are the types of dyes used in used in your chosen fabrics? Why were those dyes chosen? Give a technical reasoning for the dye class choice.
2. What types of printing are used in your chosen fabrics? If there were no prints in your chosen fabrics, what type of printing would you use for your target market? Give a technical reasoning for the print choice; this should go beyond aesthetic reasons.
The format for this discussion should be in a PowerPoint presentation of 1 to 2 slides. This assignment will not be graded; however, feedback will be given with corrections to be made and included in the final draft.
Milestone #5: Finishes, Care, and Quality
In 7-3 Final Project: Milestone #5: Finishes, Care, and Quality, you will finish specifications for the eight chosen fabrics. These specifications will be included on the table from 5-1. You will also submit a discussion including finishes, care instructions, and overall fabric quality preferred by your target market. Visuals should also be included to further enhance the overall image.
The following points should be covered in the presentation.
1. What types of finishes are used in your chosen fabrics? What do they add to the finished product? If there were no finishes on your chosen fabrics, what types of finishes would you use for your target market? Give a technical reasoning to the finish choice and include what the finish adds to the end-use product and how it affects the overall performance.
2. Give one to two examples of care instructions that would be included in the target market’s garment. This should be appropriate care language and include all of the legal requirements.
3. Give an overall quality statement. Discuss fiber choice, yarn structure, fabric structure, dye, print, and finishing choice and how they all affect the overall quality. (For example, does your target market prefer combed yarns over carded yarns? This adds expense and quality.)
The format for this assignment should be in a PowerPoint presentation (1 to 2 slides). This assignment will not be graded; however, feedback will be given with corrections to be made and included in the final presentation. Due to the timing of the course this submission is optional. If you desire feedback, please submit this section by the beginning of Module Seven. You may apply this feedback to the final presentation due at the end of Module Seven.
Milestone #6: Final Presentation
In 7-4 Final Project: Milestone #6: Final Presentation, you will submit your final presentation, which will include all of the deliverables from each milestone. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the main elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. The final presentation should include 7 to 12 slides. This milestone will be graded using the Final Project Rubric.

Final Project Rubric Presentations
In a professional career, one may be called upon to conduct research and deliver findings in professional settings. No matter how extensive the research or accurate the conclusions, a weak presentation can undermine an argument. A presentation is a tool to assist in making an argument. When creating presentations, students develop skills in researching an issue, synthesizing the information, organizing data logically, and presenting findings in an effective manner.
Requirements of submission:When applicable, discipline-appropriate citations must be used. The presentation should include 7 to 12 slides, including title and reference page.
Instructor Feedback: Students can find their feedback in the grade book as an attachment.
