I think that over time obstructive lung disease causes more problems due to debilitation, and the loss of elascticity and function, that may include cancer. As a person ages there is a narrowing of the bronchioles and alveoli to the point of becoming brittle and collapse. Cigarette smoking can play a key role in this and it has been said to me that the younger the age you are when you quit smoking, the more you save your lung compacity. Obstructive like infflammatory disease can also be treated with inhalers and aerosols. Oxygen in those who are dibilitated is a must. Screening can include biopsy,sputum culture, x-rays, ct scan, percussion, pulmonary function test, and auscultation (William Shea). Agree or Disagree
Restrictive lung diseases which cause scarring of the lungs and loss of elasticity create greater disability than obstructive lung disease. There are currently no cures for either type of lung disease but COPD, an obstructive lung disease, has more treatments such as bronchodilators or/and inhaled glucocorticosteriods, and some surgeries (bullectomy, lung volume reduction) than the restrictive lung disease such as pulmonary fibrosis(nhlbi).
One of the most important aspects of screening is to be able to diagnose correctly what type of lung disease is present. A doctor would take a medical history, do a physical exam and run tests. There is a correlation between gastrointestinal reflux disease and pulmonary fibrosis where 9 out of 10 people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis also have reflux disease. Currently no medicines are proven to slow the progression of this disease. Some medical professionals have used a combination of prednisone, an anti-inflammatory, azathioprine, an immune suppressor, and N-acetylcysteine an antioxidant but this was proven harmful in a study funded by the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute. The NHLBI is currently involved in a trial with just N-acetylcysteine.
What can currently be done through screening and treatment to decrease disability is to not smoke, treat gastrointestinal reflux disease, get flu and pneumonia vaccines, take supplements to keep your bones healthy if you are taking a corticosteroid. Other treatments are oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation which includes exercise training, breathing strategies, nutritional training, education on the disease and psychological counseling. In severe cases a lung transplant may be necessary (nhlbi)
