1. Briefly summarize the article. Focus on how the author illustrates the notion that “Homophobia Hurts Everyone”. In your summary be sure to mention how the author illustrates the social construction of homophobia. (5 points)

ANSWER:

Homophobia being the negative feelings towards the homosexuals or lesbians and them being considered to be different, this creates the tension between many relationships between the majority or dominant sexual side and these minorities. The notion on most peoples minds is that that LGBT people do not deserve to be pitted or hated because they cannot control their sexual desires and they are psychologically disturbed or may be genetically defective and that they are inferior to the heterosexuals. But this is not the case at all. These people are victimized and neglected or treated different and isolated making them have a low self-esteem. They will be mistreated and abused because of their sexuality. LGBT people are oppressed, harassed and prosecuted because of their sexual orientation and not allowed to form the relationships they would want with the same gender sex especially when they are older due to stigmatization. This is the sexual construction of homophobia. The societal pressure will eventually make the LGBT people to form marriage with the heterosexuals who will be affected by this pressure as well as their children. How the society treats these people will ultimately make them feel inferior or doing something wrong but in real sense this is just a misconception. The LGBT should be left to form bonds with their counterparts and not be forced to enter into relationships with heterosexuals and this would bring about better construction of relationships.

Briefly describe (IN YOUR OWN WORDS)the four interrelated levels on which homophobia operate. (5 points)

Answer:
Homophobia can be in the form of institutionalized setting in which schools, hospitals, civil service or even the government discourages the same sex relationships and have put consequences to these cases. Interpersonal homophobia is the situation in which the personal bias or prejudice affects relations among individuals, transforming prejudice into its active component and therefore discrimination because of their sexual orientation creeps in. Personal homophobia arises when person beliefs that the LGBT are powerless, genetically defective and those they are different or immoral and this will make oneself feel inferior. The last level of homophobia operation is the cultural setting in which social norms or codes of behavior that exist in a community legitimize the oppression which results in the distancing of the community with the LGBT people making them feel unwanted.

The author describes 12 ways in which homophobia limits the lives and experiences of heterosexuals. Select the threethat you feel are the most significant and explainwhy you feel those are the most significant. Do not describe them the GTAs and I already know what they are. I want you to explain why you feel they are so significant. (10 points)

Answer:

Homophobia may be one of the causes of premature sexual involvement thus increasing the chances of teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Since the society is against the same sex relationships, people who feel like they have a stronger suit for same sex partners will try to indulge in relationships with the opposite sex to know exactly where they stand and prove to themselves that they are normal. This should not be the case because this might ruin their lives by getting STDS.

Homophobia may result in the elimination of any discussion of the lives and sexuality of sexual minorities as part of school-based sex education, keeping vital information from all students.

This is a major setback in the fight of the spread of HIV. Since these people are victimized because of their gender, they will not feel comfortable talking about the sex topic which ends up not knowing the exact ways and means to control the spread of disease and this is a real concern since it will lead to deaths from spread of AIDS.

Lastly, homophobia limits the interaction of a greater portion of
