How does open system theory inform your approach to leading organisational change?
Open system theory informs my approach to leading organisational change by enabling me to think broadly about all the components that influence the transformation process, the transformation process itself and the impact on the outputs of the organisation. It makes me think more broadly about the environment that the organisation exists in, the inputs from that environment and the outputs into that environment. It gets me thinking about the environment in regards to global megatrends and the possible impact both resources used and outputs into the environment. Open system theory serves as a checklist to ensure change agents consider the critical components that must be matched with the strategy and environmental demands.
All organisational systems are dynamic. That is the environment the people, the completion and other factors change over time and part of that change is due to how the components interact with one another. The fit between organisational components is critical.
In my organisation our inputs are government funding, appropriately trained people, a deep culture and history in the Norther Territory, and government policy. My organisation has recently released a new strategy which takes these inputs into account. Part of this strategy is to focus on our services and efficient service delivery, and part of the strategy is to work on our internal systems to transform them in order to meet change in government reporting and service requirements and also to meet the new service delivery models around the NDIS which are part f the external environment.
