14 Jun HOW DOES YOUR SITE’S ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP PRACTICE SINGLE- AND DOUBLE-LOOP LEARNING?
Introduction to Action Science Principles
Prepare for the discussion a critical analysis of leadership at your institution, district, university, agency, or corporation from an action science perspective. Choose one organizational unit at your institution that has a defined responsibility with which you are familiar.
For example, you may choose to focus on one of the following:
The academic leadership of your college.
The marketing department of your corporation.
The curriculum development unit in your school district.
The budget department of your agency.
Your critical analysis should be a serious examination of institutional leadership, using multiple lenses in order to present a balanced evaluation of the current reality. Base your analysis on the article by Smith regarding Argyris and include two of the following concepts:
Espoused theory compared with theory-in-use.
Single-loop learning compared with double-loop learning.
Defensive routines.
Model I behavior compared with Model II behavior.
Your analysis, inferences, and conclusions should be supported by evidence, examples, and clear reasoning. A critical analysis does not include unsupported opinions. (Review Part 3 of The Craft of Research on making and supporting claims.)
You may find these guiding questions helpful in developing your analysis:
To what extent do the leaders at your research site manifest differences between their espoused theory of leadership and their theories-in-use? What evidence and examples can you present in support of your analysis?
How does your site’s organizational leadership practice single- and double-loop learning? What evidence and examples can you present in support of your analysis?
Describe the types of defensive routines you have observed in your research site; or, describe an example of a particular case or situation in which defensive routines were in play. Are these routines consistent with Model I leadership values and behaviors in your research site?
Are the governing variables and action strategies in your research site more consistent with Model I theory in use, or Model II theory in use? What is the evidence to support your conclusions? Provide examples to support your analysis.
Does the systems perspective change your way of thinking about change in your research site? What does your analysis of organizational context suggest in terms of recommendations for change?
