The Unit I Assignment One: Unit one answers are found in the Textbook and you may use other sources well, however, if you do, you must include their addresses. If you use a website you must include the entire address at the end of the paragraph and at the end of the assignment with the list of sources.

DIRECTIONS: The assignment is in WORD and located inWEBCOM 2 in tab called assign/test. If you want, you may save the document to your computer and type your answers in the space after the question. That way you can manipulate the spacing and use the features in WORD.

Turn in assignment through WEBCOM 2 where you see attach files and send assignment to the professor. Be sure your answers are thorough and complete. You will find answers in your textbook, Essential Humanities Third edition and/or in the Study Guide (Unit I). The Study Guide is in WEBCOM 2. You may also use additional information for assignments from the Internet. If you use the Internet, remember to cite your source in parenthesis at the end of your answer as well as with your list of sources at the end of the assignment in your list of sources.

6. Why do you think that in Samuel Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot”, the audience had a difficult time understanding that play when it was first performed?

12. When one looks and analyzes the work of Vincent van Gogh’s work, one notices how he utilized the elements of art such as color, subject, shape, and texture. When observing his major Post-Impressionist paintings such as The Starry Night and the Cafe scene, analyze the way he used the elements of the visual arts when he created those paintings. (Unit I). By analyzing the way van Gogh used the elements of art in these paintings, please explain how the elements helped create the mood and atmosphere of the painting. 13. In the famous painting about the bombing of the town of Guernica (below), the artist, Pablo Picasso used elements of art to express the horrors of war. He chose not to use color. Explain how Pablo Picasso expressed the emotional brutality of war through his use of the elements of art such as value, subject, line, texture, and shape. YOU MAY ALSO INCLUDE OTHER FACTS OF INTEREST (Chapter 7, Unit I). (SLO 1: ULO 1.1, 1.2; SLO 3: ULO 3.1) such as information about the bombing of the town of Guernica and how Picasso heard about this terrible event by reading it in the paper. This may have influenced him to use black, white and grey because at that time the newspaper that he read was not published with any color yet. Picasso did this mural for an International Fair and people walked by it and were influenced by the painting. This occurred before television existed.

14. In reading about the film, The King’s Speech, the speech therapist used the music of Ludwig van Beethoven to help the King of England, King George VI, from having to stutter while speaking. After reading about the scene in the text, explain how the camera movements added to the tensionand the mood of the scene in the film. The scene you will discuss is what was occurring in the sound room while the King was delivering his speech over the radio. (Chapter 7, Unit I). (Chapter 7)

NOTE: The information about this speech is in the textbook under Film, editing at end of Unit I. You may also want to find it through a Google search. Type in words, King’s Speech, film, and sound room and you will see the room, listen to 4 minutes of the speech, see the intercutting, and hear the music. Be very observant. The speech uses music to keep him from stuttering. He learns to speak clearly and boldly and that is needed because he has to convince his country to join the WAR EFFORT. (This is a true story. This is the father of the present day QUEEN ELIZABETH OF ENGLAND.) Explain the camera angles and movements, the lighting, script and camera close-ups used to create the mood in the film. The camera shot that shows the King and how he feels is a subjective shot. You will hear Ludwig Van Beethoven’s music, Symphony No. 7, played to help the King from stuttering.

Write your own observations and/or what is in the book. Cite your sources. Explain fully what you noticed while watching the clip of the scene from the film, THE KING’S SPEECH. Notice how the camera moved and what camera angles were used. Did you notice how the camera and music helped to create suspense, atmosphere, tension, mood and a spirited feeling? Did you notice the set design, the costumes and acting?
