Scenario 1: There is more Oxygen in the air than the lungs. When we inhale Oxygen it is drawn into small sacs called alveoli. The alveoli now contain more oxygen than the tiny blood vessels that surrounds it. The Oxygen molecules move from alveoli into the tiny blood vessels and then into red blood cells.
Scenario 2: A cell contains less sodium ions on the inside and more sodium ions on the outside. The cell is constantly dumping out (moving out) sodium ions through special protein pumps at the expenditure of energy. I guess, cells do not like too much sodium inside.
