1st person:
“Why is it important to know what you believe and why you believe it?”
One of my favorite expressions in life is very simple, “if you stand for nothing, you fall for anything”. No matter what a person believes, there will always be someone there to question their belief. Does that mean what you believe is wrong? No, absolutely not. However, that is why we as humans provide justification and evidence behind our beliefs. Just because you know someone who believes somethings does not mean you have to believe that same thing. Having something to believe in gives us purpose in life.
“Identify what YOU believe about God, the Bible and Jesus Christ. Why do you believe them?”
When I was younger, my mom raised me as Catholic for the first 7 years of my life. I remember never wanting to go to church because I always felt judged and as if I were constantly doing things wrong. Then, when I was around the age of 14, I decided to try a new church on my own. I went to a Baptist church and from the very first day, I felt accepted. I enjoyed attending services and Bible studies more than I ever thought I would. When people ask me why I go to church, it’s not hard to come up with an answer. I have always believe in God and the Bible. Jesus died for our sins and we were created and born to live for Him and through Him. He gave up His only life so that we can survive. One of the biggest reasons I still believe is because after everything I have been through in my life, I still feel like there is purpose for me. I had a very traumatic and difficult childhood growing up. I lived in an abusive home and even though I saw danger in my everyday life, I still prayed. Those prayers I said as a little girl have all come true. They might not have been exactly what I was wanting, but it was absolutely what I need. And I truly believe that God gives us what we need when we need it. He has saved me more than once, and for that I will be forever grateful.
2nd person:
The world is full of different ideas, doctrines and principles all designed to answer the inevitable life questions of who we are, where we came from and what the meaning of everything is. If you are not rooted in your beliefs, you will easily be influenced by all these various ideas being thrown around and fail to have stability. As a Christian, it is important for me to know what I believe and why I believe it for that reason. Also, it is vital for me to know what I believe and why if I wish to have any impact on people I may share the gospel with. If I am not even convinced myself or struggle to logically support what I’m saying, how should I expect anyone to take me seriously? Thus knowing the “what and why” of my faith is important for me personally, and the people I come into contact with.
I believe in the Genesis account of creation, that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (1:1). God is responsible for the creation of the world and is sovereign over all that takes place in it. I believe that every word of the Bible was penned by its authors under the influence and direction of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible serves as a “life-guide” for our time on earth speaking wisdom, truth and revelation. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God- that He walked this earth living a sinless life as fully God and fully man, and ultimately died on a cross for the sins of humanity, fulfilling the Old Testament scriptures. Three days later, He rose from the dead conquering the power of sin and death. All who place their faith and hope in Him will be granted eternal life in heaven (John 3:36).
