Imagine that you, a historian, had come upon the objects and readings that serve as primary sources for this week. Although much of the real work of shaping the beginning of the English Reformation was undertaken by officials (most importantly, Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell), King Henry VIII of England was head of the English state, and eventually, head of the English church as well.
Based on the primary sources youve found, who was Henry VIII? What was his role in the English Reformation? How significant was Henry VIII to the changes made in the English state and church in the 16th century?
Then, think more critically and more broadly. There is a theory of history popularized by the Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle in the 19th century, known as the “great man” theory. This idea shaped–and continues to shape–much history writing. The idea is basically that history is shaped by highly influential people (usually males), “great men”, who decisively affected the worlds history by using their individual talents/power/charisma in ways that were highly impactful. More recently, scholars have become skeptical of this way of looking at history, and have proposed that individual people do not affect history nearly so much as large group actions and forces bigger than people like population growth or economic expansion or climate change. This remains a debated issue. This week, were looking at the role of Henry VIII in the English Reformation. As you think about the sources and ideas for this week, also think about the “great man” theory. Do you believe it, in general? Does the case of Henry VIII support or contradict it?
