In your readings this week there is information about the scientific method and molecules that are vital for life – such as lipids. Several years ago manufacturers started adding synthetic DHA, a fatty acid, to infant formulas. Both Europe and Asia had added this supplement to infant formula for many years before.
There is also research saying that babies who are breastfed for 9 months or more have higher IQ’s than babies who are bottle fed. Will the addition of DHA change this?
Below is a scholarly article from Science Daily about a study done on babies who were fed both formula with DHA, DHA and ARA, and formula without these lipids added. Also provided is a popular website saying that DHA in infant formula is harmful. Is the information posted on the popular website based on science or pseudoscience?
How was the scientific method used to support all of these findings? Was it good science? What type of experiment would you design to validate these findings?
