Here are some questions to think about in discussing what you learned in the last two chapters of Plan B and how that information relates to you locally, and then comparing it to a very different approach – Transition Town:
What do you think about Lester Brown’s great mobilization plan and the role of individuals and society in this great mobilization plan?
Please discuss one aspect of the plan that most impressed you or you were most uncomfortable with, and what the role of individuals and society are in this great mobilization. Feel free to respond to your classmates on any aspects of the great mobilization.
What did you learn in the chapter on “Feeding Eight Billion People Well” that you did not know before? How does the information you read in that chapter apply to you locally?
How is the Transition Town approach compare to the Great Mobilization? Compare and contrast the two approaches. How do their roles for individuals differ? Or do they?
Feel free to discuss any of these multidisciplinary questions, bringing in agricultural science, social science, and whatever else you see applicable in addressing how to move forward toward sustainability using the ideas of Lester Brown and Rob Hopkins.
Topic 2: Designing cities and rethinking cities and towns Contains unread posts
Discuss some of the ideas you have read about sustainable cities, and how to transform our present cities to sustainable cities, citing either Brown or Rob Hopkins or “The End of Suburbia” or any other source you have read or seen on the subject of sustainable cities.
Underlying theme to think about and discuss:
How does sustainable cities alleviate stressed ecosystems?
Do sustainable cities help to avoid the tragedy of the commons? If so, is that due to changes in policies and infrastructures?
Further questions to consider:
What sustainability blunders do we need to overcome in America to bring about sustainable cities?
How effective were the authors of “The End of Suburbia” versus Rob Hopkins in making the case for the need to change and motivating you to change? Explain their effectiveness or lack of effectiveness and share how you will use this knowledge in your final assessment.
