Instructions on reviewing Russia’s Sputnik GenerationThis collection contains eight interviews with former students of the English-language school in the Russian provincial city of Saratov who graduated in 1967. The interviews were arranged and recorded by a renowned American historian who for many years conducted his research in that same city’s archives. All interviews have the same structure and revolve around questions which reflect upon wider developments in the Soviet society and the world. Taken together, they allow the reader to better grasp social, political and cultural developments in the Soviet Union from 1960s through the end of the century. This collection strongly conveys the diversity of interests, life experiences, political preferences and cultural tastes of this small sample of former Soviet and now Russian citizens. It is on this diversity that you will dwell in your review. You will choose three questions from the following list and answer them by citing at least three different opinions on the subject from this collection. By the end of your review you should have cited all eight interviews.1. What are the attitudes towards the Soviet past which are displayed in these interviews? What was the interviewees’ attitude towards the West: positive or negative? Did they believe Soviet propaganda about the West or did they not? Did they travel outside of the Soviet Union during the Soviet time and if yes, how did this travel affect their worldviews?4. Were the interviewees exposed to Western propaganda, say via radio broadcasts? Did this propaganda affect their worldviews or were they impervious to it?5. How did the interviewees experience the decline of the Soviet system in the 1970s and early 1980s? Did this decline affect their life? If yes, in what way? Did this experience lead to the reevaluation of values, to the changes in their worldviews?6. How did the interviewees view and experience perestroika and Yeltsin decade (1990s)? What are their attitudes toward Gorbachev and Yeltsin as the country’s leaders as well as toward their reforms? Do they believe those reforms were necessary and beneficial or rather destructive?7. Would you be able to define the political views of the interviewees? Say, liberal, conservative (in the broad cultural sense), left, right, nationalistic, cosmopolitan, apolitical? If yes, do so with respect to at least four interviewees. Try to prove your case by citing their interviews.Always cite your source and/or refer to the page (pages) of the book where the text you are summarizing is located.
