Course Project

Zara is a clothing and accessories retailer based at Arteixo, Galicia spain and founded in 1975. Zara differentiates it self from competitors in several ways, starting from the design process, manufacturing and logistics, and marketing.

In the design process, Zara focuses mainly on customers’ demands. What most companies do is trying to guess what the customers want in advance, or introduce new designs to the customers and try to push those designs into the market. However, Zara’s design process starts with the customers themselves. Zara starts the design process by gathering data from its stores about what the customers actually want (design data is collected from the customers at the stores, from sales data, and from the employees of the stores). After collecting the data, teams of young designers study what has been collected and make draft designs, and send them to manufacturing. When customers visit the various stores, they will be asked for feedback or comments on the current designs and what they would like to see and save the information. Questions will be like “what colors would they prefer to see that shirt? “ and “do you prefer long sleeves on that shirt or short one?” as well as comments about the materials used to manufacture the clothes. This information will be stored in the system by the customers using devices that will be located on the stores and when they check out at the cashier. These devices should be working without outage during the stores working hours. The Store employees will also provide the information based on their experience with the customers. Information will also be collected through stores’ sales data. Designers could get useful information from what the customer want and what they actually buy. Customers will make orders only through the stores as part of Zara policy. This policy was introduced to make customer visit the stores often, particularly because each store will contain different designs approximately every two weeks as the designing process of Zara usually takes two weeks to introduce new products. In the marketing section, Zara manufactures products with limited production run. The clothes you find in a Zara stores now, are not the same if you visit in two weeks. This helps to create an exclusivity sense for Zara’s customers, it also helps Zara to sell the products at full prices, reduce the risk of creating new designs, and it encourage the customers to visit the stores more often. Zara does not take the architecture design of the stores lightly, newer store front designs are studied and developed at the company’s headquarters. The stores locations are important for Zara; stores are usually located at “Fancy” malls and streets.

In the manufacturing and logistics processes lies Zara’s big advantage over the competitors. Zara’s has an incredible from-design-to-shelves time record. It takes fifteen days for a design at Zara to arrive at the store (on average), while competitors, like H&M, spend around three to five months to deliver a design to stores. This helps Zara stay on top of competition due to the changing nature of the fashion market.

Zara’s designing process start from designers studying the information collected from the various sources mentioned above, the information will be available to them from the system, and then they will create draft designs and store them in the system. By storing this information, every designer or designing team can claim the rights to a design in an organized matter, because each year, management grant an annual award to the design with the best sales.

Executive managers give this award after checking the design with the highest sales.

After designers submitting draft design in the system, executive managers will check the draft design before giving the approval to the designs so that manufacturing can start. The system will assign a design or set of designs to a manufacturer after checking the information of the manufactures to reduce the time and cost of production. An approved draft design could be manufactured by several manufactures according to the need of the company. After receiving the approved draft designs, manufactures then can start production and record the finished items in the system and ship them directly to the appropriate stores, these stores will be chosen by the system which will again assign the best location of each product according to sales and other information.

Lastly, management would like to introduce a website to allow customers to get information about the locations of the stores and working hours as well as to submit complaints.
