Assignment 3
Outcomes addressed in this activity:
Assignment Instructions:
1. The Code of Fair Information Practices (http://www.ftc.gov/reports/privacy-online-fair-information-practices-electronic-marketplace-federal-trade-commission) applies only to government databases. Consider the concept of consumer privacy and data protection. There is a potential conflict of interest between the consumers who want to protect their data, and the businesses who want to use consumers’ data for profit – whether by selling that information, or using it to direct advertising activities. Explain the Fair Information Practices Act. Compare and contrast the Code of Fair Information Practices with the private sector’s use of information. Is the private sector better at self-policing than the government, or should the government’s rules be extended to include private databases?
2. The sharing of information has become almost commonplace in today’s society from texting to Twitter, people are sharing their thoughts and whereabouts thousands of times a day. Many organizations are taking interest in this information to help them carry out their directives. Employees have been fired (or not hired) as a result of Tweets and Facebook® posts, prosecutors and police are tracking down criminals using social media, and criminals have been put behind bars based on their texts and cell phone location records. Despite this, many people still believe that they have their privacy. What are your rights with regards to the information that you post or text? Does your level of privacy increase depending on your network/cell phone provider? The social media site that you are using? Explain.
3. Many of the laws that are on the books were written long before the Internet and therefore do not contemplate issues created by today’s networking. Research legislation related to technology that has been proposed or passed within the last five years. Describe the legislation. Indicate whether it passed, or if it is still in consideration. Then, explain the benefits and drawbacks of the legislation you chose.

Assignment 4
Assignment Instructions:
1. You are working as a designer for a university that offers a program in Computer Science. One of the tracts is computer security. One of your colleagues has recommended adding a course addressing network security. In this course, students learn about the history of networks and study network attacks that have caused significant damage to the network that was the subject of the attack. During the second term of this two semester course, the students are taught how to hack into a system, how to create malware (including Trojan horses, viruses, and worms), and how to perpetrate a DOS attack. Choose one or more of the ethical theories discussed in Chapter 2 and combine that with research to determine whether this course should be taught. Be sure to discuss both sides of the issue before taking a specific side. Would it make a difference if this was a graduate or PhD level course instead of an undergraduate level course? Explain.
2. In May, 2012, Nevada became the first state to grant a license to a self-driven car. The Google Computer Driven Car has driven over 175,000 miles, albeit with a human driver behind the wheel in case something goes wrong. There are numerous cars that have the ability to park, to alert the driver in the event that the car leaves its lane, and cars that alert the driver to objects in its path and take appropriate corrective action. Consider a society in which computers control automobiles, eliminating human error. What are some of the ethical issues that must be considered in introducing cars like this to mainstream society and widespread use?

Assignment 5
Assignment Instructions:
1. The ACM and the IEEE both have a code of ethics. Do some Internet or Kaplan Library research on the codes of ethics for these two organizations. Compare and contrast these two documents. Do they cover all of the same topics? Are there clauses that are in one, but not the other? Does this render one or the other inadequate? Consider both and explain what you would add to create a complete code of ethics for IT professionals.
2. You work for a large, multinational corporation. The CEO approaches you indicating that there has been a decrease in productivity over the past year, along with a decrease in the quality of work that is being produced. She believes that the root of the problem can be found in Internet and cell phone usage during working hours. The company uses key loggers and has access to all e-mail sent through the company e-mail system. It also has cameras placed on all floors of the building for security that record 24/7. Research the employees’ right to privacy and recommend a plan to address the CEO’s concerns.

Ethics in Technology
Some say that no technology is inherently good or evil. Rather, any technology can be used for either good or evil purposes. Research ways in which technology has helped or hindered society. Read at least two articles for each view (total of four articles). Summarize the decisive points for each side. What are your thoughts on how technology has helped or hindered society? Choose one side of the debate and explain your position.
Choose two classmates’ posts; one that has the same position you took and the other with an opposing view. For both posts, make the counter argument (in other words, if they argued that technology helped society, you will argue that it has hindered society). Remember netiquette rules, and use a minimum of two sites to support your position.
Please remember to include in-text citations and APA style references for each of your sources.
Ethical Issues
Recently, the government attempted to restrict the trafficking in intellectual property by introducing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). Both of these proposals were extremely controversial as many viewed them as a restriction on first amendment rights. Select one of these bills and research it thoroughly. Explain the purpose behind the bill and why it was controversial. Then, explain whether you feel that it is an illegal restriction on the freedom of speech, or if it is a necessary law to protect intellectual property rights.
Respond to at least two classmates. Select one classmate who chose to report on the other bill (in other words, if you chose SOPA, select a classmate that reported on PIPA). Read their post. Do you agree with their analysis of their bill? Why or why not?
Topic responses
Internet Privacy
Research on the Internet for legal cases that provide examples of cases that contain ethical issues related to privacy. Analyze the two cases that you found most compelling. Respond to the analyses of your fellow class members.
Please reference each of your examples using proper APA style formatting.

Professional Ethics
NSS Software Inc. has been hired to create an online banking program for NMM Bank. You are hired as an independent contractor to develop an IM module for the overall program. As per your contract, security of the messenger will be handled by NSS Software, Inc. After you deliver the module, you determine that NSS Software delivered the program without adding security to your IM module. You bring this to the attention of the banking program’s team leader who hired you and he explains that the team was over budget and behind schedule and therefore could not add the security features, but because this is just the IM module, and not related to any accounts, it won’t be a problem. He also reminds you of the confidentiality agreement in your contract which reads as follows:
Confidentiality: Subcontractor acknowledges that during the course of this agreement, subcontractor may come into the possession of certain confidential information regarding NSS Software Inc., including but not limited to proprietary information, software code, and business practices, disclosure of which to third parties may be damaging to NSS Software Inc. Subcontractor, therefore, agrees to maintain the confidentiality of said information in perpetuity, and not use said information except in the performance of this Agreement.
What would you do in this situation?
Review your classmates’ posts. Find someone who chose a different approach than you. Justify their position and propose at least one additional argument as to why their approach is appropriate.
Choose a classmate who chose a similar approach to the situation as you did. Argue why their approach is not appropriate in this situation.
UCITA
Suppose the legislature in your state is debating the adoption of UCITA and you have been called as an expert witness. Based on your research, decide whether you would recommend adoption of the UCITA or not. State your position. What are the three most important ideas you want your legislators to get from your testimony?
Select one classmate who chose the same view as you. Read your classmate’s statement and take the opposite position. Respond in detail to each statement presented by your classmate.
Select one classmate who chose the opposing view as you. Read your classmate’s statement and take the opposite position. Respond in detail to each statement presented by your classmate.
Support your statements with reasoning and research. Remember to cite all of your sources using APA format.
Closing Points
Discuss what you have learned in this class about ethics from a personal and professional standpoint. Consider how ethics applies in your current career. Explain which theories in this class mirror your ethical position and how you will apply these in your career.
