Lab Writing Assignment: Spring/Summer 2017

(35 points)

The goal of this assignment is to familiarize students with LabScribe data analysis and presentation. Using the data collected in lab, to generate the figures and table (both with legends) in the order below to be handed in next week.

COVER PAGE:Assignment Title, Name, Class, Section, Instructor (1 point)

RESULTS: Be sure to show ALL calculations below the legend(not the format outlined below, the actual numbers!)

Figures/Tables: 4 points each Figure or Table

Grammar/presentation format: 6 points

Figure 1:

Generate a LabScribe image showing exactly 30 seconds of resting pulse pressure data. Within that image, position the cursors 25 seconds apart and determine pulse rate for the time period indicated. Label the pulses counted. Determine the average pulse rate at rest (using calculation indicated in the lab manual) – show actual calculation below figure legend) and include those values calculated in the Figure legend.

Figure 2:

Generate another LabScribe image showing exactly30 seconds of post-exercise pulse pressure data. Within that image, position the cursors 25 seconds apart and determine pulse rate for the time period indicated. Label the pulses counted. Determine the average pulse rate after exercise (using calculation indicated in the lab manual) – show actual calculation below figure legend) and include those values calculated in the Figure legend. Secondly, calculate the percent change from the resting heart rate determined in Figure 1 (see calculation below). Avoid using the phrase ‘% change from resting’ in the legend. Rather, describe the change with reference to its direction.

.png”>= change from resting pulse rate (%)

For example:One could indicate that ‘There was a 56% change from resting pulse rate following exercise’, although it is more appropriate to indicate that ‘Exercise was associated with a 56% increase in the pulse rate’.

Figure 3:

Generate animage with exactly 10 seconds of resting pulse pressure data. In that image, show (with Labscribe cursors) how the amplitude of the pressure pulse was measured (first cursor at trough, second cursor at peak to right of trough). Include strength of that pressure pulse (V2-V1) in the legend along with the average and standard deviation of all the pressure pulses illustrated in the image (measure strength of each pressure pulse and calculate average and standard deviation – can be done in Excel template).

Helpful hint for this and future lab reports: By convention, the average (4.5 grams) and standard deviation (0.5 grams) of a set of data are reported as one entity (4.5 ± 0.5 grams) as they describe the distribution of that data. Thus, there is no need to specifically mention standard deviation: just report it as indicated above (average ± standard deviation).

Figure 4:

Generate an image with exactly 10 seconds of post-exercise pulse pressure data. Analyze the data as in Fig. 3. In the legend, include the average and standard deviation of the pressure pulse strength post-exercise and change from resting pulse strength (compare to the average resting pressure pulse strength in figure 3). Show the calculation performed for percent change in pulse strength.

Table 1:

Create a table to summarize the data generated in the figures above. By convention, units are only in the column titles, not in each cell. Tables must also have a legend that summarizes the data results shown.

For example: The data below show that exercise increased the subject’s pulse pressure rate while decreasing the strength of their pressure pulse.

Pulse Rate (pulses/min)

Pressure Strength (volts)

Resting

60

3 ± 0.5

Post-Exercise

70

2 ± 1

Change from Resting

16.7 %

-33.3 %

Figure 5:

Generate a LabScribe image showing the entire trace of the force transducer calibration experiment using a total of 80 grams. As part of the figure, include (as an inset) the calibration window that indicates the values to be used in conducting the force transducer calibration.

Figure 6:

Create a graph in Excel and import into your document showing total weight on the pan as each 10 gram bar is added (X axis) plotted against the weight determined with LabScribe (Y axis) after calibration is performed. Add a trendline to the data (right-click a data point; add trendline; linear; include the slope equation). Discuss why the data do or do not fit the trendline.
