Linux Implementation Proposal

Question

Linux Implementation Proposal

Sphynx, LLC. has a new research group that will be developing new methods of electronic parts fabrication. All systems in this new research group will have to run a linux operating system. Additionally, there are many employees that will work in the new group and will continue to also be part of other groups in the company. The employees in the new group will have to share data and files with one another as well as with some employees outside the division. Sphynx LLC already has a Microsoft Active Directory domain and the new group will need to utilize it as much as possible. The AD domain consists of several Windows Server 2016 servers running various services (Microsoft Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, printing, web and file services). All the employees that will be working in the new group are already employed by Sphynx LLC and those moving to the new group are technical enough to know how to use the linux operating system with little to no training required.

Sphynx, LLC. also has around 700 client operating system desktops/laptops that run Windows 7/10 and Windows XP. There is a mix of desktop and laptop systems.

Your boss wants you to come up with a proposal to replace all Windows XP systems with linux. After reading a few research articles, and on the advice of some of the scientists joining the new group, he has told you to do some research and pick between the Slackware and Arch linux distributions, and determine which one would be more suitable.

Requirements

The final submission should contain at least 5 to 7 pages’ worth of text written by the student (not counting title page, images, diagrams, tables, or quotations that may be used), but may be longer, not to exceed approximately 7 pages’ worth of student-supplied text. It must be doublespaced, have 1-inch margins, and use 12-point Times New Roman or 10-point Arial/Helvetica font. A title page is required. Submission must be a Microsoft Word “doc” file or OpenOffice “odt” file.

You must turn in this assignment to both the assignment area within our LEO classroom as well as to the TurnItIn website. Failure to submit to the TurnItIn website will result in it NOT being graded. Follow the TurnItIn instructions provided within the class.

You must address the following in your proposal and may make any assumptions which are not specified:

  • Research and justify whether to use existing computer hardware that is being used with the Windows XP systems, or if new hardware will be required.
  • Plan for migration from Windows XP to Linux.
  • Determine the version of linux to be used and the different installation options. Explain which installation method(s) will be used and why.
  • How will users log onto the systems? Explain.
  • How will systems receive IP addresses? Explain.
  • How will DNS be accessed by the new department systems? Explain.
  • Explain how files on the network may be accessed by the new department.
  • Explain how to securely share files within their group and other selected groups/users in the company.
  • How will printing be handled? Explain.
  • What data will be encrypted and how? Explain.
  • Use of GUI based tools for configurations is fine as long as the files modified behind the scenes are noted and explained. Review the rubric for specific points to requirements details.

Review the rubric for specific points to requirements details.

Pointers:

  • Do not just copy and paste above requirements for headings on proposal
  • Explain what you are planning and why you made the choices you did
  • Do not just copy or cut and paste installation steps from a “How-To”, that does not meet the requirement
  • Start thinking about the requirements early and keep notes as you go through the class.
