Mac Naughton and Williams (2009) describes documentation as gathering and organizing information to provide a written or pictorial record of children’s learning. Portfolios should be accessible to children and parents at all times. Parents should also be encouraged to contribute in portfolios and this can establish a strong partnership between educators and families towards learning and development of their children. Children should be able to freely access their portfolio and reflect on their achievements, and they should be encouraged and given the opportunity to choose which of their work they want to go in their portfolio as in the present time, children are considered as active co-constructors of knowledge. This is informed by the Early Years Learning Framework for Australia which presents the image of children as, ‘active participants and decision-makers who connect their own understandings and contribute to others learning’ (DEEWR, 2009, p. 7).
