Group Assignment

In a two-part essay:

a. Discuss the tools and techniques in management accounting that can be used to support an organisation’s sustainability objectives.

Two good starting points for your research are: the textbook (Chapter 17) and the IFAC’sInternational Guidance Document on Environmental Management Accounting.

Please note the following:

· Format: Essay

· Contribution to overall assessment: 25%

· Length: 2000 – 2500 words

· Due date: Week 10 (See course description)

· Your work must comply with the University’sGeneral Guide for the Presentation of Academic Work.

· This is a group-assignment. Each group needs to have 2 to 3 members in it. Please organise yourselves into groups.

· Please make sure that names and ID numbers of all group members are stated on the cover sheet of your submission.

As this is a group assignment, each member of a group is awarded the same mark. Working in groups has its pros and cons. I am sure that you will hold constructive and energetic group discussions on the issues at hand. In case of any disagreements, you will be able to resolve them in a democratic and rational way. There will be times when you may have to agree to disagree with each other. Invariably different group members bring different skills to a project; it is up to you to make the best of it. I believe one can learn a lot by discussing the issues with one’s colleagues.

If you happen to find your group members are “not pulling their weight” or there are problems with any member’s commitment, then please try to resolve those issues amongst yourselves. Open and honest communication always helps. If you are unable to resolve these issues, you are most welcome to see me and we will try to sort out the problems together. Do this as soon as possible and certainly before the due date.

Notes for the markers:

We are looking for a sound and coherent argument that is backed up by relevant research. It is a very broad area. Students could bring in:

· ABC that can be extended to include social and environmental costs.

· Balanced scorecard

· Analysis of Environmental costs

· Social Impact Assessment.

· Supply Chain issues

· Capital expenditure analysis

· Issues discussed in IFAC’s EMA document.

Ideally, students should also identify the problems in using these techniques.

Re: the specific case – BlueScope Steel – requires a critical evaluation of the company’s CSE reports for 2010-2011. Important: their discussion should include both description and interpretation of the issues. Students should note the changes through 2010-2011.

Please place a tick at the appropriate point on a continuum from HD to P to F. The overall grade depends on where most of the ticks are – say Pass – 50%, Pass + 55 % or Credit 60%. Finally, it is not only a matter of what the students are saying in their essay, it is also a matter of how are they saying it. In other words, content, expression, structure, logical development of the argument and presentation are all important. Their essay must comply with the University’s General Guide for the Presentation of Academic Work.

Please remind your students that it is their moral responsibility to acknowledge others’ ideas in their work. Therefore, they need to reference their work properly.
