PROJECT SUMMARY: AUTOMOTIVE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE PARTS
The project is designed to learn about the engine parts and the processes to manufacture the main parts of the engine. Each class section will be divided into sub groups to cover the following main parts of the engine:
a. Engine block
b. Connecting rod
c. Pistons
d. Cam shaft
e. Crank shaft
f. Flywheel

During this course, students will get introduced to various manufacturing processes, including shaping processes such as casting, bulk deformation processes such as rolling and extrusion, sheet-metal working such as blanking and piercing, powder metallurgy, machining processes, rapid prototyping, Computer Numerical Control machines, and micromachining.
Each group will select a part of the engine to be their project main focus of study. The group will perform an analysis of the product design dimensions and structure and then develop an engineering report of the processing and manufacturing steps of that product. They should include good levels of details of the manufacturing processes that can be used in the manufacture of that product and the related machines and equipment. They will need to provide information about those machines. The group needs to check the library and other creditable resources on the design and structure of the automobile engine to identify the design characteristics of their part.
Elaborate detailed manufacturing steps or using a new innovative manufacturing processes is considered as an advantage point for the team.
Further, and for being in the industrial engineering discipline, the groups are required to conduct some research on the current advances in the automotive engine manufacturing processes and the related contemporary issues in that.

V. DELIVERABLES & PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Deliverable 1: initial report (Week 5)
• A properly formatted short report (5 to 10 pages + cover page and appendices) that states the following: Team members’ data, the topic and suggested title of the project, the purpose of the work and expected contents, product description, in addition to a preliminary work plan.
• Pay attention to the following in your report:

1 Explain what the function of the part in the engine is.

2 Materials used for the product (a justification from materials handbooks or universal standards is a must).

3 Number of parts and part dimensions’ measurements along with detailed engineering drawings or clear images of the parts with dimensions. Use the basic engineering graphics skills. Sketches and non-professional graphics are not acceptable.

4 Explain how this part is related to other parts in the engine: where it fits and how to assemble it to the joining parts.
