About the assignment: You will connect course material to real news articles. After reviewing a topic from our text, review various articles in news publications on the Internet. Good sites include The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Business Week, or any credible news source. You are also welcome to use any type of news article as long as you can connect it to a concept from our text and class.
NOTE: Do NOT use an advice-oriented article or study. Articles that discuss the qualities of good leadership or motivational techniques should NOT be used. This is not an essay expanding on points from the text – it is application focused. Focus on news and then see what topics may apply. Think about strategy. Is there a company that has recently changed how it competes in the market? Did it add a new product line or sell off a division or subsidiary. Or have you read of company that has expanded overseas? Ethics is another popular topic as is sexual harassment and other human resource topics. Also think about culture, task and general environments.
1 – Find a news article or video that you can relate to any of the material from one of the chapters we have covered to date. Your paper does not have to relate to all chapters or all parts of one chapter. It will likely relate to all or a majority of a learning objective. Read the article/watch the video thoroughly. Try to pick an article from the last three months. Be sure to copy the Web address as it will be required in the paper.
2 – Using the attached Assignment Form, you will write a paper connecting what you read in the article to material in the text book. Follow the directions on the form. If you do not follow the directions, points will be deducted. There are details in the form that you MUST follow to receive the maximum amount of points. See the rubric attached to the file to see how the paper will be graded.
You will must cite the text book and article in your report. Points will be deducted if the paper does not include citations. If you are unsure, see me or go to the BCC (rm. 114).
Do NOT copy and paste any portion of the article or the text into your paper. This should be your own thoughts and in your own words. If any portion of the paper is word for word or essentially the same words, you will be penalized under the university’s academic integrity guidelines. See the course syllabus for details or see me.
Short quotes are acceptable but only a few and only brief quotes. Quotes should be formatted correctly (use BCC to find out how). Points will be deducted if quotes not formatted correctly.
DO NOT submit one giant paragraph. That is not acceptable for students of your caliber. Points will be deducted.
Submit either a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. If I am not able to open the file, I will ask that you email me the assignment and will tentatively give you a zero for the assignment. As soon as I get a file I can open, I will grade it using the rubric.
